Google has made live translated captions generally available for Google Meet.

Meeting participants can now translate English into French, German, Portuguese and Spanish in web browsers and on mobile devices.

“Translated captions help make Google Meet video calls more inclusive and collaborative by removing language proficiency barriers,” Google said.

“When meeting participants consume content in their preferred language, this helps equalise information sharing, learning, and collaboration and ensures your meetings are as effective as possible for everyone”

“This feature can be particularly helpful for all-hands meetings or training meetings with globally distributed teams. Translated captions can be impactful in education settings, allowing educators to connect and interact with students, parents, and community stakeholders with diverse backgrounds.”

The new feature, which was previously in beta, is available with five Google Workspace subscription options:

  • Business Plus
  • Enterprise Standard
  • Enterprise Plus
  • Teaching and Learning Upgrade
  • Education Plus

Google said that users with the beta version of the function on different subscriptions to those listed above can continue using it for “the next several months”.

The feature will be available by default and can be turned on in Google Meet’s settings.
