Recently, Microsoft and Skype for Business have announced the development of the new “SmartDock“, a solution for the Surface Pro 4, which Skype for Business users can access to bring all the controls and cables in their room to a single point.

The impressive SmartDock features an HDMI connection to link to the TV screen, alongside three USB ports for extension microphones, a gigabit ethernet, and a headset jack. There’s an optional extender box available to hide cable clutter and improve functionality too. The main collaboration has been around the user interface software that’s designed to make the Surface Pro 4 into a controller for Skype for Business, working on all Logitech video conference solutions, as well as a wide range of other AV products.

According to the senior director for Logitech Global, Joan Vandermate, Logitech and Skype for Business have enjoyed a long-standing collaboration over the years, devoted to consistently creating and promoting high-quality devices that are simple for teams to use. With the SmartDock from Logitech, Skype for Business users will have the opportunity to easily begin video calls, share their content within meetings, and streamline collaboration efforts.

The Logitech dock comes with a motion sensor feature that’s designed to wake up the Surface Pro whenever someone enters the room, or close it down when nobody is present. Additionally, the SmartDock also supports up to 1080p video conferencing at 60FPS – making it perfect for clear HD video meetings.

The whole system works via an integrated “ribbon” connector for the surface, and it’s secured by a Kensington-style slot for security.

The extender box for the SmartDock makes use of a single five-in-one cable that runs for five metres and includes dual HDMI, USB, Ethernet, and power cords. There are 2 USB 3.1 ports, as well as two amplified HDMI ports that support up to 1080p at 60FPS for video calls. There’s also the option to access an integrated “GROUP” Hub with DIN ports for the GROUP speakerphone and camera.

Packages with the Surface Pro 4 included begin at around $4000, and come with options such as:

  • Large meeting room collaboration (20 PAX) with 2 extension mics
  • Medium meeting room collaboration (14 PAX) with Logitech Group
  • Huddle Room (6 PAX) including SmartDock, Microsoft Surface Pro 4, and Skype for Business, as well as Logitech ConferenceCam Connect
