Twilio, the leading cloud communications platform, has announced that the company’s privacy governance program has been approved by the EU Data protection authorities. Approval of Twilio’s Binding Corporate Rules (BCRs) affirms Twilio’s commitment to maintaining the highest standard of data protection and makes Twilio one of just 130 companies worldwide to receive this significant regulatory approval. Today’s announcement follows Twilio’s recent news that the company is fully committed to compliance with GDPR regulations.
“BCRs are considered a very high standard for data protection” said Karyn Smith, general counsel at Twilio.
“Having the EU data protection authorities review and approve our privacy governance program assures our customers that they can trust Twilio with their data, no matter where they are in the world. We’re pleased to further build on the trust we have established with our customers.”
BCRs provide multinational companies a set of internal rules for transferring data that are in compliance with EU data protection laws. To ensure that all data transfers are safe and secure, all BCRs contain privacy principles such as transparency, data quality and security as well as tools for effectiveness like auditing, training and systems for handling compliance. A company’s BCRs undergo a rigorous regulatory approval process by EU data protection authorities that confirms that the company’s data privacy policies meet the highest level of requirements and that the company’s customers receive equal protection wherever they exist in the world.

In addition to the approval of Twilio’s BCRs, Twilio recently announced the company’s commitment to compliance with GDPR regulations. Twilio has also has achieved its ISO 27001 compliance, the standard for protecting personally identifiable information in the cloud, its SOC 2 for Authy, the standard for secure, compliant hosting, and is a member of the Cloud Security Alliance. Twilio is also self-certified to the EU-US Privacy Shield as well as the Swiss-US Privacy Shield Frameworks.
