VTech, the world’s largest manufacturer of cordless telephone handsets, has signalled its intention to gain a presence in the VoIP market with the purchase of IP telephony pioneer Snom.

VTech, which is also well known as a leading brand of children’s educational technology, has announced it has entered into a binding definitive agreement with Berlin based Snom, and will acquire 100 per cent share capital of the business, pending approval by financial regulators.

Founded in 1996, Snom became one of the world’s first manufacturers of IP-ready telephone handsets for business and professional use. It has since grown into a global business, with four million online PBX and SIP protocol installations worldwide.

VoIP is the Future

C. H. Chong, president of VTech, said:

VoIP is the future of business communication and the industry is now transitioning to a cloud-based Unified Communications environment. As a pioneer in this field, Snom is constantly developing new and advanced IP technology solutions to meet the needs of businesses worldwide.

The main synergies of the acquisition will be in hardware and software development, expanded market channels in VoIP telephony, and improvement in operational efficiency.

Founded in 1976, VTech offers a wide portfolio of technology and telecommunications products and services for both the consumer and enterprise markets worldwide. It manufactures range of comms devices and hardware alongside cordless phones, and is also one of the world’s leading electronic manufacturing contract service providers.

Its well know brand of educational toys offers electronic learning products for children up to preschool age.
