According to a study from Frost & Sullivan – the company known for exploring global trends and opportunities around the world, cloud communication adoption is set to grow by 27% or more through to 2021.

As organisations of all shapes and sizes look towards digital transformation (DX), the cloud offers a level of flexibility and scalability that would be impossible to access on-premises. It’s no wonder that companies like Gamma, a market leader in selling communication solutions to small, medium, and enterprise-sized customers, are seeing an explosion in the cloud segment.

At this year’s insightful UC EXPO conference, I had the wonderful opportunity to speak to David Macfarlane – Managing Director, Direct at Gamma. David joined Gamma in 2012 when his managed services business was acquired by the organisation. Now, he’s helping the company progress on its journey of innovation and growth.

How has Gamma Developed Their Position as a Market Leader?

Gamma is easily one of the largest and most impressive SIP trunking, VoIP, and cloud communications providers currently active within the United Kingdom. David gave me an introduction to what the market currently looks like from their perspective, noting that Gamma currently has more active SIP channels than any other provider today – including BT.

“During the last six months of 2017, the overarching SIP trunking market was growing at a rate of 5%, but Gamma saw a growth of 12% in that same period. We’re number one in terms of market share for the SIP trunking space in the UK. At the same time, when it comes to hosted voice or cloud communication, the market growth was a much more impressive 11%. However, Gamma still saw significantly greater growth than average, with a 20% rise in the same period.”

How is Gamma Bringing New Solutions to the Market?

There are plenty of reasons why Gamma is storming ahead in the UK market for cloud communications and SIP trunking alike. Their services and products are reliable, and their customer service is fantastic too. One particularly interesting new development in the Gamma portfolio comes in the form of their new fixed-mobile convergence solution “Connect.”

“Connect essentially brings Gamma Mobile together with all the features you’d expect from our Cloud PBX system, Horizon. That means that you get a simple and sophisticated solution for interconnected mobile and /unified-communications/ucaas services in your pocket.”

Essentially, Gamma has taken their hosted telephony platform and baked it seamlessly into their mobile offering. Because Gamma operates their own mobile network, you get true fixed mobile convergence, without the need for additional complexity to use the service. Products like Connect are now available to help users access the call management and handling features they’d need on a desk phone, on their mobile phones. This is a big play for Gamma, particularly as they continue to thrive in the SME, mid-market and enterprise spaces.

“Having a mobile in your pocket with true UC is a powerful thing for the modern marketplace. It’s helping us to differentiate ourselves with a really unique market proposition.”

What Has Gamma Seen in the Cloud Market?

Cavell Group LogoGamma’s market traction is already significant in the UK, and it’s bound to grow with services like Connect coming into the space. Gamma believes that their single solution for fixed mobile allows them to offer a scalable, and more flexible solution for customers who want to embrace the remote workforce, or even shift their workloads into new formats.

Macfarlane told me that the biggest trend Gamma sees right now involves the accelerated move to cloud communications at almost all levels.

“The cloud part of our business is growing stronger every year and every quarter. If you look at the Cavell reports lately, you can see that the market is very much focused on replacing their PBX, but a growing number of companies are replacing their SIP infrastructure too. Where, over recent years, we’ve seen a significant increase in SIP trunking to help customers to connect to on-premises systems, that excitement might be moving to the cloud.”

What Cavell have said in their studies is that they’re starting to see the SIP trunking market slow down. While it’s still growing, it’s quickly beginning to be eroded by cloud communications seats and the need for more cloud-based subscription models.

How Will Gamma Stand Up Against Competition?

It’s safe to say that as the move to cloud communications continues to accelerate; Gamma is in a strong position to help their customers transform. Their cloud PBX and SIP trunking solutions are already leaders in the marketplace for UK businesses. Additionally, now that Gamma is streamlining the communication solutions they offer with mobile convergence, they’ve got even more flexibility to offer their users.

Of course, the marketplace is seeing a lot of non-traditional competition coming in with companies like Amazon, Twilio, Google, and so on. While all of that movement is definitely shaking things up, Gamma is uniquely placed to thrive with a BroadSoft offering over their network, and their own custom portal. They’re innovative, forward-thinking, and they have a special place in the market. It’s safe to say that this is a boat that’s going to be hard to rock.

It was great to speak to David Macfarlane at UC EXPO this year, and I’m excited to see where the Gamma journey goes next.
