Their product SmartWAN first released in 2015 and targeted at enterprise customers, is now being made available to small and medium-sized business. Vonage have expanded SmartWAN to its over-the-top solution for companies using public broadband.

The expansion of the SmartWAN offering to smaller organisations enables Vonage to offer greater Quality of Service and reliability to those that operate with even a single connection via public Ethernet, Broadband, and LTE enabling potentially enhanced network performance and business continuity.

We spoke to Sanjay Srinivasan, PhD, Chief Technology Architect for Vonage to find out the main drivers behind the developments.

What were the main drivers behind the new development?

“More businesses are relying on the cloud to power their business applications and communications tools and an increasing number of businesses are also relying on public broadband to do so. For those customers using Vonage Business Cloud, our over-the-top solution, we saw an increasing demand for Quality of Service and reliability of a unified communications solution without the need for a private circuit. Expanding our SmartWAN solution to this segment of customers directly addresses this need and provides a path for network optimisation to better serve our customers and help them drive better business outcomes.”

How are Vonage ensuring SD-WAN is an affordable technology within the SMB market?

“Vonage offers the SD-WAN service as a subscription model allowing customers to handle this as an OpEX vs CapEX. The service is also priced in tiers, allowing customers to tailor their investment for their individual connection needs.”

“Customers also have the opportunity to leverage the built-in firewall features, giving them an option to consolidate separate pieces of equipment and reduce cost. We also educate customers on the value of the Quality of Service and high availability afforded by the service via reduced number of trouble tickets they need to handle and hence drive down overall operational expenses.”

The new development massively increases the potential customer base, do you have any idea on how many additional customers might now be reachable for Vonage?

“With our existing offering to enterprise customers, we have been seeing about 40% of new deployments including SmartWAN. With the expansion of the offering to customers on our proprietary platform using public broadband, this increases SmartWAN’s reach.”

Reliability is a critical factor for SD-WAN providers, what do you see as the other main drivers for businesses?

“Businesses today need communications that enhance internal communications and collaboration inside the company for its employees, while also improving engagement with customers outside the company for deeper relationships and increased customer loyalty.”

“With a robust portfolio of unified communications solutions and embedded, contextual communication via APIs, Vonage is uniquely positioned to answer these challenges for businesses.”

For organisations that rely on these public connections to provide voice, video and data communications to enable their business functions, Vonage’s SmartWAN solution offers enhancements for internal and external communications.
