UKG has unveiled Pro Pay with Workforce AI, a new addition to its AI-powered HCM platform designed to modernize payroll operations and reduce errors at scale. The offering brings together multiple forms of AI, agentic, assistive, and generative, to help organizations identify and resolve payroll issues as they occur.

The goal is straightforward: ensure employees, particularly frontline and hourly workers, are paid accurately and on time while reducing the operational burden on payroll teams.

β€œPay day is the most important recurring moment for the frontline workforce. When pay is wrong, it hurts the business on multiple fronts,”

Gretchen Alarcon, General Manager and Senior Vice President of Enterprise HCM Solutions at UKG, said.

Payroll has long been one of the most complex and risk-prone areas of workforce management. UKG is targeting this complexity by replacing fragmented manual processes with a more orchestrated, real-time system that can surface issues earlier and guide resolution across the payroll lifecycle.

A Deeper Look at Pro Pay With Workforce AI

Pro Pay with Workforce AI introduces a suite of capabilities aimed at automating and augmenting key payroll workflows. Rather than relying on static reports or post-processing audits, the system continuously analyzes payroll data to detect anomalies, flag risks, and recommend actions.

One of the central components is Payroll Auditing AI, which allows teams to audit payroll using natural language queries. This shifts auditing from a manual, report-heavy task into a more dynamic and accessible process, improving both speed and accuracy while supporting compliance requirements.

Complementing this is the Payroll Analyst Agent, which investigates payroll variances identified during audits and surfaces root causes. This reduces the need for time-consuming manual analysis and helps teams move more quickly from detection to resolution. In parallel, Payroll Anomaly Detection AI compares current payroll data against up to five years of historical records to identify deviations and prevent errors before they affect employees.

The platform also introduces tools designed to streamline correction and execution. Payroll Checks AI enables administrators to fix pay issues through a conversational interface. Payroll Administration Experience AI provides a unified AI workspace, while AI-assisted payroll processing automates scheduling and execution with built-in review points. Together, these capabilities are designed to reduce processing time and improve consistency, particularly in complex environments with variable pay structures.

Why Payroll Accuracy Is in Focus

For a company focused on HCM and payroll, UKG’s investment in AI-powered payroll reflects a growing recognition of payroll’s strategic importance to employee well-being. Pay is not just an operational output; it directly influences employee trust, engagement, and retention, with a HiBob survey showing 53% of employees would consider leaving if payroll problems persisted.

On the administrative side, errors in payroll also create costs. According to joint research from UKG and KPMG, organizations lose between 2% and 4% of total labor spend to what is described as β€œpayroll leakage,” which is unintended and often unnoticed financial loss. For large enterprises, even a 1% inefficiency can equate to millions in lost value, highlighting how small errors can scale quickly.

The complexity of payroll is a major contributing factor. Organizations must account for fluctuating hours, multiple pay rates, job codes, tax requirements, and benefits deductions, all of which vary by employee and pay cycle. In frontline-heavy industries, this complexity is amplified by shift work and variable schedules, increasing the likelihood of discrepancies.

UKG’s approach positions AI as a way to move payroll teams from reactive troubleshooting to proactive oversight. By identifying issues earlier and automating routine processes, payroll teams can focus less on fixing errors and more on ensuring accuracy and improving the overall workforce experience.

From Back Office to Strategic Function

With Pro Pay with Workforce AI, UKG is aiming to transform payroll into a more intelligent, responsive, and strategic capability. The emphasis on real-time orchestration and human oversight suggests a hybrid model where AI handles detection, analysis, and recommendations, while payroll professionals retain control over approvals and decision-making.

This balance is likely to be key for organizations navigating both efficiency gains and compliance requirements. For businesses, the potential upside extends beyond cost savings. More accurate and timely payroll can improve employee satisfaction, reduce disputes, and strengthen trust, particularly among frontline workers who are most directly affected by pay issues.

Looking ahead, the trajectory is clear: payroll is becoming more integrated, more data-driven, and more integral to workforce strategy than ever before. UKG’s latest launch positions AI as the mechanism to unlock that shift, with the expectation that real-time, intelligent payroll systems will become the standard rather than the exception.
