Amazon's $4 billion investment in Anthropic

Amazon has completed its $4 billion investment in leading AI business Anthropic.

First announced in September, the collaboration aims to combine the expertise of both companies to enhance the safety of generative AI, expedite the development of Anthropic's future foundation models, and offer accessibility to AWS customers. Customers are leveraging Anthropic's Claude AI on Amazon Bedrock to revolutionise user experiences, transform their businesses, and accelerate their Gen AI journeys.

As part of its strategic collaboration, Anthropic and AWS announced that Anthropic has chosen AWS as its primary cloud provider for vital operations such as safety research and future model development.

"We have a notable history with Anthropic, together helping organizations of all sizes around the world to deploy advanced generative artificial intelligence applications across their organizations," commented Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of Data and AI at AWS.

Anthropic’s visionary work with generative AI, most recently the introduction of its state-of-the-art Claude 3 family of models, combined with Amazon’s best-in-class infrastructure like AWS Tranium and managed services like Amazon Bedrock further unlocks exciting opportunities for customers to quickly, securely, and responsibly innovate with generative AI."

Anthropic will use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to develop its future models. Additionally, Anthropic will provide AWS customers worldwide access to its foundation models on Amazon Bedrock, AWS's fully managed service for building generative AI applications.

Earlier this month, Amazon announced Anthropic's most advanced AI models had become available on Bedrock. Amazon says the Claude 3 family of models, particularly Claude 3 Opus, showcases groundbreaking advancements in intelligence, responsiveness, accuracy, and vision capabilities. Amazon claimed that industry benchmarks demonstrate that Claude 3 Opus has surpassed existing models, including OpenAI's GPT-4, in reasoning, mathematics, and coding.

"Generative AI is poised to be the most transformational technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further improve our customers’ experiences, and look forward to what’s next," added Sivasubramanian.

Additionally, AWS, Anthropic, and Accenture have teamed up to accelerate the adoption of advanced generative AI in regulated sectors. This collaboration provides organizations with Anthropic's top models, Amazon Bedrock's capabilities, and expert guidance from Accenture, Anthropic, and AWS to build and scale AI applications responsibly.

Anthropic's Journey So Far

While Microsoft and OpenAI have built a close dynamic, perhaps too close according to several antitrust regulatory bodies, Anthropic has received investment from several tech giants.

Last May, Zoom partnered with Anthropic to build sophisticated and reliable AI systems.

The collaboration sought to enhance Zoom’s federated approach to AI by integrating Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, with Zoom’s collaborative platform. Zoom Contact Centre was the first solution to be integrated with Claude. Zoom Ventures, Zoom’s startup investment offshoot, also announced it had invested in Anthropic.

Last October, Google invested $2 billion in Anthropic to accelerate AI innovation. Initially, $500 million was injected, with plans for an additional $1.5 billion over time. Prior, Google had invested hundreds of millions, securing a ten percent stake by April 2023. Notably, part of this includes cloud services. This signals Google's commitment to leveraging AI's transformative potential across its products.
