Microsoft Windows 11 rollout date

Microsoft has revealed that Windows 11 will start rolling out on 5 October.

On this date, the new operating system will become available for Windows 10 devices and PCs will start shipping with 11.

In a blog post, Windows Marketing General Manager, Aaron Woodman, said the update rollout will be “phased and measured”.

“New eligible devices” will receive the offer of an update first, with older in-market devices receiving the update later, based on models that assess the devices age and hardware eligibility.

Woodman said that all eligible devices are expected to have been offered the update by mid-2022.

Microsoft revealed Windows 11 in June, surprising many after previously indicating that Windows 10 would be the last full release, supported by updates over time.

The new operating system includes tighter integration with Teams, including a flyout that opens chats in the new taskbar. The integration will be for the consumer version of Teams to start with.

As part of the push with Teams consumer, Skype will not be installed on Windows 11 machines by default but will be available to download on via the app store.

The Windows 11 launch comes six years after Windows 10 entered the market, the longest stretch between operating systems in Microsoft’s history.
