Out Loud: Catch-up on the Cavell Cloud Comms Summit

This episode of UC Today's Out Loud was recorded during the Cavell Cloud Comms Summit in Washington DC.

Rob Scott was joined at the event by Matt Townend who is the Director of Cavell.

Rob and Matt firstly review the event. This year was the first to be hosted by Cavell in the US so had a slightly different feel to the previous six that took place in Europe. Matt details the attendees which included senior management from over 50 service providers as well as some of the industry's most innovative vendors.

"We had some of the real decision makers in terms of the financial community, so really it was the meeting of the industry that we wanted."

Matt then runs through the main trends that he recognised at the event. The one that stood out to him most, was the astounding growth within the industry with all of the delegates realising the huge opportunity this represents for their businesses.

From a technology perspective there were a number of platforms that appeared to take the lead with CPaaS one of the biggest talking points.

"People are starting to realise that they really have to look at ways that they can differentiate their products to their customers and a lot of that is often about integration - how can we bring communications into the context of our customer and I think that is where CPaaS is being discussed, as a tool to do that."

The other area which Matt is particularly excited about is the opportunity represented by SD-WAN. Cloud communications providers have an opportunity to leverage that SD-WAN capability to further enhance their relationship with customers.

As well as the technology trends, the market has also been dominated by consolidation in terms of acquisitions. The looming shadow of the giant players Microsoft, Google and Amazon is present as well as the potential disruption from innovative new players like Twilio but Matt feels the service provider community is more than capable of standing up against these challenges.

Finally Matt and Rob review some of the future trends that might become more prevalent over the coming years. The capability is there in a lot of the platforms available but are customers really utilising the full breadth of features, Matt maintains that is key to future productivity gains.
