Pointless Meetings: UK Companies Still Can't Keep Up with Remote Workforces

Video conferencing company and creator of the "Meeting Owl" camera, Owl Labs recently revealed a new study with One Pulse into remote worker productivity.

UK companies and pointless meetings

As productivity in the UK continues to suffer, and the remote workforce expands to new levels, innovative video conferencing company, Owl Labs has teamed up with One Pulse to conduct new research into the state of work. Inspired by the shifting needs of the labour market, Owl Labs set out to find out what UK companies need to do to meet the needs of flexible and remote employees. According to the study, over half of this new generation of staff feel that their employers aren't doing enough to support them.

The Owl Labs study also revealed that collaboration and communication need simply aren't served properly for those working at home. Around 4 out of 5 employees say that they struggle to stay engaged when they join remote meetings.

Exploring the Research

The decision to conduct this latest research into the UK job market was prompted by the recent reports that UK productivity levels are reaching an all-time low. For the first quarter of 2018, the UK has suffered from dangerously low productivity, with levels dropping far lower than the levels achieved before the financial crisis took place in 2008.

The research examined 1,000 employees in the UK to figure out how the UK is responding to the increasingly popular gig economy. Alongside an issue with remote worker disengagement and lack of meeting opportunities, the research also revealed that:

  • 53% of staff feel that their modern day working needs aren't met
  • 77% of staff simply can't feel engaged when attempting to join meetings remotely
  • 80% of UK team members spend up to 7 weeks per year in "pointless" meetings. Another 14% revealed that they can spend up to 10 hours a week in unnecessary meetings - wasting a lot of valuable time for productivity

Time to Revolutionise the Work Environment

The CEO of Owl Labs, Max Makeev noted that it's becoming increasingly important for businesses to think more carefully about their flexible working policies. As remote work becomes more popular, the UK is still failing drastically to meet the needs of their new workforce.

Owl Labs' innovative video conferencing hardware is the company's attempt to solve some of the remote working issues that today's employees face. The IoT meeting room device offers a 360-degree smart conferencing camera to businesses in search of a way of engaging remote worker. The camera offers a more immersive experience intended to improve the productivity and outcome of meetings and reduce the number of pointless interactions in the average company.
