Cisco is envisaging a 3D experience for Webex that will make it feel like virtual participants are in the room, according to CEO, Chuck Robbins.

Robbins said that Cisco is already working on this technology, adding that he wants the experience of being a remote attendee in a meeting to be “less terrible”.

Speaking to CNBC, he said the aim is to bridge the gap between physically being in the meeting and joining via technology.

“In the future world, we’re going to have people sitting in conference rooms and we’re going to have people at home,” he said.

“You know what it’s like historically to be a remote attendee of a meeting.

“It’s been terrible, so we’re working hard on technology that gives the same experience to both, which is the first thing.”

When asked how video conferencing might look in five years, Robbins said that Cisco is already working to making 3D meetings a reality.

“I think you’re going to see real 3D experiences. You’re going to be virtually in the room and there’s a lot of work that our teams are doing right now to build that next-generation technology”

“I think that’s what you’ll experience in a few years.”

Webex was the shining light when Cisco recently announced its quarterly results. Robbins said the videoconferencing platform saw “strong momentum” as the networking giant reported flat revenue growth.

Cisco announced 50 new features for Webex at WebexOne last year.
