What Is The Most Popular Video Platform In the World?

Zoom leads global video calling as Teams and Google Meet trail. Published on UC Today, EmailToolTester data shows market share shifts buyers should note.

Most popular video platform in the world

Zoom is the most popular video calling platform globally, according to research from email marketing company EmailToolTester.

Zoom ranked top in 44 of the 122 countries analysed, including the UK, US, Russia and Japan. Its popularity was attributed to its ability to host 100 call participants in one meeting, allowing mass virtual social gatherings during the pandemic. Zoom has 49 per cent of the global market share and has seen the biggest year-on-year growth of all 16 platforms, according to the data

However, Microsoft Teams is not far behind its rival, dominating the rankings in 41 of the countries surveyed, including Poland, the UAE and South Africa. It holds over 40 per cent of the market share in each of those territories. Despite its ubiquity among Microsoft Office users, Teams only has 15 per cent global market share.

Google Meet trails behind Zoom and Teams for market share, with 21 countries choosing it as their preferred video platform, including Singapore, the Philippines and Malaysia

EmailToolTester conducted its research by analysing the number of online searches for 16 of the most popular conferencing platforms in 122 countries using SemrushIt then divided the number of searches each platform received in each country by the total number of searches for all 16 platforms to determine market share. Global market share was then calculated using the total number of searches across all 122 countries.

The survey also revealed that beleaguered Skype, previously the most popular video communications platform worldwide, saw the biggest drop in global market share in the past year. In February, it dominated the market with a 32 per cent share, but that share has now shrunk to a seven per cent market share.
