Workplace is back up and running after Facebook services went down across the world yesterday.
WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Workplace all went offline at around 5pm BST yesterday for around six hours.
Users trying to reach the services on a computer were told that the websites couldn’t be reached, while mobile apps stopped updating and messages could not be sent.
Facebook has now revealed that the outage came from a configuration error that stopped its datacentres communicating with each other.
“Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our datacentres caused issues that interrupted this communication,” it said.
“This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our datacentres communicate, bringing our services to a halt”
Facebook stressed that there is no evidence of user data being compromised as a result of the outage.
