Workplace Back Up After Huge Facebook Outage

Workplace is back up after Facebook’s global outage exposed backbone router misconfiguration; buyers should note the risk to Workplace Chat, WhatsApp and Instag

Workplace app Facebook outage recovery

Workplace is back up and running after Facebook services went down across the world yesterday.

WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Workplace all went offline at around 5pm BST yesterday for around six hours.

Users trying to reach the services on a computer were told that the websites couldn’t be reached, while mobile apps stopped updating and messages could not be sent.

Facebook has now revealed that the outage came from a configuration error that stopped its datacentres communicating with each other.

“Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our datacentres caused issues that interrupted this communication,” it said.

“This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our datacentres communicate, bringing our services to a halt”

Facebook stressed that there is no evidence of user data being compromised as a result of the outage.

At the time of publication, Workplace was listed as up and running, albeit with minor issues associated with notifications and Workplace Chat.

The outage length was contributed to by the fact that Facebook’s internal tools were offline, with some reports claiming that engineers could not get into Facebook facilities because their ID badges were not working.

The issue is thought to have been caused by a misconfiguration of Border Gateway Control, which routes traffic to a website, meaning Facebook’s services could not be found by web browsers and mobile apps.
