WhatsApp Working to Enable Cross-Platform Interoperability
WhatsApp is working on enabling cross-platform interoperability to comply with the EU's recent Digital Markets Act.
As first reported by WABetaInfo, an independent and dependable WhatsApp news provider, a WhatsApp for Android beta update delivered last weekend involved a "Third-party chats" screen. The screen doesn't work for users yet, but its inclusion in the update ostensibly confirms that Meta is attempting to make WhatsApp cross-platform compatible.
The beta update dropped after the EU's Digital Market Act passed, with the European Commission saying that Meta fulfils the definition of a "gatekeeper". As a result, communications platforms such as WhatsApp now have to be interoperable with third-party messaging apps by March 2024, according to EU law.
"WhatsApp is one of the companies that will be required to comply with the new regulations outlined in the European Union's Digital Markets Act," WABetaInfo wrote. "This is because WhatsApp is considered a gatekeeper service since it's a large tech platform with a substantial user base and falls within the criteria set by the DMA. With the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.19.8 update(…), we discovered that WhatsApp is working on complying with the new regulations."
