The profile picture is a staple in any social media or collaboration tool, helping other users quickly identify friends or colleagues from a contact list or group. Indeed, profile pictures are a quintessential part of Web 2.0 characterized by social interconnections, which could one day be replaced by the 3D virtual avatars of Web 3.0. For now, profile pictures in Zoom perform two purposes – it helps identify a person in a contact list, and it also replaces your video feed in a Zoom call in case your webcam is turned off.
By default, before you have the chance to upload a Zoom profile picture, the video conferencing application will show your initials as a stand-in for the image. Importantly, it is mandatory to add both your first and last name before you can use Zoom. If you do not want your initials to appear, you can upload a profile image.
