Microsoft security acquisition rumour

Microsoft is eyeing a move for cybersecurity incident response firm Mandiant, according to reports.

Bloomberg reported that talks are underway but no offer has been made, citing people familiar with the discussions. There is no guarantee that a formal bid will be made.

Mandiant is listed on the NASDAQ market and has a market cap of $4.26bn.

FireEye acquired the business in 2013, but last year the FireEye product business was offloaded to McAfee and Mandiant reverted to its original name.

Mandiant’s share price rose over 20 percent when the rumours surfaced, although neither party has commented.

Microsoft last month revealed plans to acquire gaming firm Activision for $68.7bn, in what will be its biggest takeover ever.

The firm has placed an emphasis on cybersecurity over recent years, making four acquisitions in the space: CloudKnox, RiskIQ, CyberX and Refirm Labs.

Mandiant released its quarterly numbers yesterday, with sales in Q4 climbing 21 percent year on year to $133m.

Microsoft, meanwhile, revealed last month that Teams has hit 270 million monthly active users.
