Meta Adapts to Hybrid Work by Reducing Office Sizes

Meta’s office cuts show how hybrid work is reshaping workplace real estate. Published on UC Today, the move affects desks, leases and Teams.

Meta reduces office sizes for hybrid work

Meta has revealed plans to reduce the size of some of its offices as many employees continue to work from home.

The news has circulated among several major news publications, including Fox Business and the Wall Street Journal.

Reports suggest that the social media giant will rearrange some office layouts by clustering desks and teams together to put employees in closer proximity to each other.

John Tenanes, Vice President of Global Facilities and Real Estate at Meta, said during an interview that the aim is to make working spaces more dynamic for employees.

He commented: "One of our jobs is to recalibrate our space; we're creating a smaller venue for the same amount of folks.

"It's a smaller venue, and we're hoping that really drives a life in the building: more energy, more activity."

Fox Business reports that Tenanes said it was too early to state how much of Meta's overall real estate could shift as well as not confirming specific locations or cities that are likely to see changes.

Tenanes stated that the company might let some of its existing office leases expire or could consolidate floors across multiple buildings into a single one.

Reports suggest that the company is also evaluating whether to keep office spaces in buildings it never moved into.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta Chief Executive, reportedly notified employees in a session recently that the company would be implementing a "hiring freeze" as it looks to reduce the company's costs.

Meta opened its new office in Midtown Manhattan's redeveloped Farley Building last month.

The company has also recently opened an office in San Diego and announced plans to close an existing office at 225 Park Avenue South in New York.
