World leaders in technology, Microsoft, recently announced that they had signed a definitive agreement to purchase virtualised network provider, Metaswitch. Metaswitch specialises in delivering software for voice, communication, and data solutions for operators. Microsoft believes that the convergence of communication networks and the cloud presents a unique opportunity to support operators globally with continued investment in the Azure environment.
With the Metaswitch purchase, Microsoft wants to add further depth to its infrastructure for hyperscale cloud while implementing software for running virtualised communication applications and networks too.
The decision to buy Metaswitch comes soon after Microsoft purchased another company, Affirmed Networks, with the deal closing on the 23rd of April 2020. The complementary portfolio that Metaswitch offers for high-performance and cloud-native communications software will also lead to a better range of offerings from Microsoft in Telecoms.
Developing a Stronger Ecosystem
Microsoft wants to use both the technology and talent of Metaswitch and Affirmed Network to extend and enhance the Azure platform. According to the purchase announcement from the Microsoft team, the plan is to create a more secure, efficient, and sustainable ecosystem, with greater telecommunications capabilities.
As the landscape continues to look towards the future with disruptive technology like 5G, Microsoft will offer operators more opportunities to virtualise their networks and embrace a cloud-native environment. The Microsoft portfolio aims to continue meeting customers wherever they are, working with the industry to help network equipment providers and operators evolve.
