Microsoft is launching the OneDrive for Teams app to enhance collaboration and productivity.
The OneDrive for Teams app will replace the Teams Files app and will roll out for the new Teams client this December. The new updates to OneDrive in Teams will roll out to classic Teams in early 2024, but the Files app name will be unchanged. There is also no update to the Files app on Teams mobile.
Noga Ronen, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Microsoft, wrote in an accompanying blog:
The OneDrive app will soon replace the Files app in Teams, giving you consistent and familiar file management experience across all of Microsoft 365. The new OneDrive app takes advantage of all the recent updates made to OneDrive and SharePoint library experiences, bringing you the benefits of performance improvements, new views, and feature enhancements in OneDrive."
New Teams users will notice that the OneDrive app now appears in place of the Files app in the left-hand navigation.
What are the new Enhancements in the OneDrive for Teams Experience?
The updated OneDrive app consolidates files, Loops, dashboards, and design boards from Microsoft 365 into a unified workspace. Users can access both their created and shared content across Microsoft 365 directly from Teams. Enhanced views and filters encourage efficient file management, allowing rapid retrieval of specific content.
For instance, users seeking a particular file can navigate to the OneDrive app on the left rail navigation bar, leveraging filters based on people, file type, or meetings to simplify the search process. This optimization enhances the overall file management experience, creating a more effective and organized workflow.
OneDrive Home consolidates a user's recent files and other content, including Loop, Lists, Power BI, or Whiteboard. It doesn't matter where this content is stored in Microsoft 365. Meanwhile, the "For you" section at the top of the OneDrive home page shows users AI-powered file recommendations with thumbnails and file activity updates.
Any file that’s been shared with a user, irrespective of whether it was shared in a chat, channel, meeting or email, will be displayed in the shared view. It’s a user's go-to area to discover all the files on which they were collaborating. The meetings view highlights to users their upcoming and past Teams meetings, as well as meeting recordings and shared files.
