Teams Recovers From Outage

Why it matters: a Microsoft authentication change disrupted Teams, Azure and Microsoft 365, hitting Yammer, Outlook, SharePoint and PowerBI. Published on UC Tod

Microsoft Teams outage recovery

Teams is back up and running after an outage took down multiple Azure and Microsoft 365 services.

Microsoft said the worldwide issue was caused by “a recent change to an authentication system”, adding that all users could be affected but not all had been.

Services including, but not limited to, Yammer, Outlook, Teams, Forms and SharePoint were impacted but most of these services have now been “recovered”, according to Microsoft 365’s status page.

The vendor kept users updated on Twitter, revealing it was in the process of rolling back the authentication update which took longer than expected.

At the time of publication, a handful of services such as InTune, Microsoft Managed Desktop, PowerBI and OneNote were still experiencing issues.

“Any service that leverages Azure Active Directory may be affected,” Microsoft said.

This is the first major outage Teams has experienced since September.

Competitor Slack also suffered an outage at the start of the year as employees returned to work following the Christmas break.
