I've seen the phrase UPaaS banded about a bit recently and thought it was time to clear up the confusion. In the world of business communications I think it stands for the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in Singapore.. only kidding.
I first spotted UPaaS on a tweet by Vonage in 2016 where they were explaining the overlap between UCaaS (unified communications as a service) and CPaaS (communications platform as a service). To be fair, I don't think anyone had particularly coined the phrase before this time.
UPaaS hasn't really taken off as a phrase. However what it does do, is bring our attention to the potential benefits of combining UCaaS with CPaaS technology - which is a powerful combo.
Here's Vonage's infographic:
Earlier in 2016 Vonage (a leading UCaaS provider) acquired Nexmo (a leading CPaaS provider) for a cool $230 million. UPaaS makes the merger of the two companies make sense.
