Balancing a career with parenting remains one of the most challenging issues for professionals across telecoms and wider technology. In this fourth episode of Women in Telecoms podcast episode, industry voices share candid experiences of childcare, travel, flexible working, parental leave, and the pressure to meet expectations both at work and at home.

A central theme is that flexibility should not be treated as a workplace perk. Instead, it can be essential for retaining experienced people and helping parents continue to develop their careers.

The conversation explores the practical realities many working parents face, including:

  • The cost and availability of childcare
  • The financial pressure that can limit extended paternity leave
  • The mental load of coordinating family life alongside demanding roles
  • Perceptions around part-time work and flexible hours

The panel also highlights the need to challenge outdated assumptions about parenting roles. From fathers being described as β€œbabysitting” their own children to schools routinely contacting mothers first, participants reflect on how ingrained expectations can place disproportionate pressure on women.

However, the discussion also points to progress. Hybrid work has created more flexibility for some families, while supportive managers can make a significant difference through trust and mutual understanding. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all policy, employers should work with individuals to find arrangements that reflect their responsibilities while supporting business needs.

For many, the answer lies in partnership – between parents, employers, colleagues, and wider support networks. Working parents should not have to choose between career ambition and family life. With flexibility, trust, and more balanced expectations, the telecoms sector can help more people succeed in both.
