StarLeaf has launched a bespoke collaboration and workflow solutions for NHS trusts in partnership with Flabba.

The platform has been rolled out to over 100 NHS trusts, around half of the trusts in the UK, and will allow doctors and nurses to carry out more primary and secondary care remotely.

Thanks to the partnership with Flabba, that will see StarLeaf video conferencing technology integrated into Flabba’s healthcare-focused workflow solution, healthcare professionals can manage bookings, share documents, and conduct consultations online, as well as communicate with fellow employees in large or small meeting rooms.

Speaking to UC Today, StarLeaf Product Manager, Daniel Boddington, said that the partnership has come about to combat the coronavirus, adding that the solution is not a temporary one.

“We’ve had a whole lot of amazing use cases come from the pandemic, things like foetal scannings of pregnant mothers done remotely, mental health appointments, and we’ve even had people setting up iPads on the side of premature baby incubators, so the mothers can see them even though there isolating,” he said.

“But one of the biggest things that’s come out with these trusts is they like using video and have been asking us to create a way to run virtual patient appointments, allowing them to use technology to run primary and secondary care patient appointments”

“We did some investigating and found Flabba in the middle of last year and worked with them because they have a focus on making sure the technology and workflows are seamless and built around the end-user.

Changing attitudes

Boddington went on to say that although the necessity for remote primary and secondary care has come about as a result of the pandemic, StarLeaf and Flabba do not want to replace face-to-face consultations.

“I’m never going to advocate replacing in-person, patient appointments,” said Boddington. “I think a lot of trusts are offering them alongside an appointment in person.

“What we’ve tried to do between StarLeaf and Flabba is remove any of the technological differences, difficulties or challenges patients might face. For example, some people are averse to technology and are not using technology such as a phone, or joining video calls every day. In that case, we make sure the platform is really simple and remove all the unnecessary parts, so they can access that appointment when they need to.”
