Leading video communications company, Zoom, has achieved an incredible level of growth in recent years, thanks in part to the astronomical changes happening in the world of work. As the pandemic pushed employees into new remote and hybrid working environments, businesses have relied more heavily on simple, intuitive video to maintain collaboration.

As restrictions begin to lift, and countries start looking forward to a life after the pandemic, Zoom has begun to ask what the future of work might look like in the years ahead.

According to a blog released by Zoom, it’s impossible to fully predict the future of today’s world, but there are some trends shaping our current reality that could indicate what the years ahead might hold.

The Transition to a New Age of Work

Zoom notes that for the last 18+ months, companies have been dealing with uncertain circumstances, remote working teams, and new challenges. Going forward, flexibility will continue to be a priority for employees, with most staff members keen to maintain at least a hybrid working schedule. Only 1% of Zoom users say they want to go back to working in an office full-time, while over half wanted a hybrid environment.

According to Zoom, employers need to identify what the new phase of work should look like with an understanding of their team’s needs. The future of work will be built on a foundation of mutual trust and understanding – something Zoom is keen to support. To establish and maintain trust within teams, Zoom recommends:

  • Being consistent: Zoom always updates employees on potential plans during meetings, and advises team leaders to do the same, promoting constant transparency
  • Ask specifically what people need: When building a new working environment, Zoom notes that business leaders need to ask specific questions, like how many days do people want to work in the office, and which activities are best for remote work
  • Listen to teams: Companies need to value the opinions and insights of their employees, while showing they understand their concerns
  • Be candid: Be straightforward about the complexities of making workplace transitions and highlight the need for constant learning and experimentation

Zoom’s Approach to the Future of Work

Zoom notes that its own extensive platform has played a huge part in enabling teams to manage the new age of remote work. The company doesn’t plan to rush a return to the office and is instead preparing a hybrid approach for strategic remote and office work.

According to Zoom, listening to employees and understanding their needs is important. Employees need to be able to trust their employers to protect their wellbeing and safety. At the same time, employers need to trust team members to perform well outside of the office.

Zoom hopes to enable a new age of trust and collaboration, with features like Zoom Rooms Smart Gallery, to support the age of hybrid work, and intuitive video conferencing to build deeper connections between teams.
