In our now increasingly techy world, we can sometimes make the assumption that every industry is as on-board with technology as we are. But for some industries, the decision to introduce more technology into their business can be harder.

In hospitality businesses – such as cafés, restaurants, pubs and bars – the decision on whether to offer their customers fast and free WiFi could have a positive or negative impact on their business. To tell you why, here are some insights from Nisbets catering supplies:

The arguments against introducing WiFi…

  • People are looking for a break from technology. People often want to take a bit of technology-free time out of their day – particularly if they’re enjoying a meal with friends, or are out after work. If venues offer this as an option to their visitor, they may well appeal to this particular demographic, looking for tech-free space
  • Smartphones can make a group less social. A group of people sitting in a restaurant or café, each using their smartphone, does not help to create a sociable atmosphere. If an owner is trying to create a vibrant, sociable atmosphere, providing guests with free WiFi may well hinder this
  • Smartphone and internet activity could cause disruption. Free WiFi will encourage customers to use their devices in a venue, when it could be not appropriate or suitable to the venue. In peaceful and quiet cafes, or high-end restaurants, for example, the loud use of smartphones may be damaging or inappropriate to the atmosphere

Sharon Evans, owner of the award-winning The Lime Tree café, argues AGAINST WiFi:

“We wanted to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere […] it changes the ability to share space and the general ambience.”

The arguments for introducing WiFi…

  • The public demand for WiFi is undeniable. A BT survey discovered that 61% of diners search for a WiFi hotspot when eating. In addition to this, 49% of survey respondents believed having access to WiFi was important to them
  • Having WiFi helps businesses reach a very key market. More people are expecting access to the internet wherever they go – including restaurants and cafes – when they are studying, meeting friends or having small business meetings. Failing to provide this can stop people from using a facility.

Restaurant owner Reza Amini argues FOR WiFI:

“More people are using their smartphone for running their personal life as well as work while they are out and about. In addition, many are engaged using Facebook and Twitter throughout the day so they need to get online. The free WiFi is an incentive to bring them into our restaurants.”
