Fireflies, the AI-powered meeting assistant, has introduced a new ‘Talk to Fireflies’ feature which allows users to ask questions and receive real-time answers during video calls via voice or chat.

The update includes integration with Perplexity, bringing web search capabilities directly into live meetings.

According to the company: “Talk to Fireflies with Perplexity search is available to all Fireflies users, including those on free plans, and works with all major web-conference platforms like Google Meet, MS Teams & Zoom.

Likewise, Perplexity customers can also query Fireflies meeting data directly on their Perplexity account through an integration.”

What Can It Do?

The feature is designed to streamline decision-making by reducing the need to switch between apps or search for notes mid-conversation.

Users can interact with Fireflies using voice prompts like “Hey Fireflies” or by typing commands into the meeting chat. The assistant supports over 60 languages and is compatible with major video conferencing platforms, including Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.

Key capabilities include:

  • Meeting Context Awareness: Users can ask for clarifications on who said what, identify action items, or summarise parts of the meeting using real-time transcripts.
  • Web Search Integration: Through Perplexity, Fireflies can access and present up-to-date information from the internet during meetings, including market data, definitions, and news.
  • Combined Insights: The assistant can blend meeting content with external web data to provide more informed responses.
  • Task Assignment: Users can assign action items, tag teammates, and bookmark moments directly through voice or text commands.

Looking at how it ranks on privacy, Fireflies states that it does not use meeting data to train its AI models and gives users control over which integrations are active.

Meeting content, including transcripts and audio, remains private by default.

The feature is available to all Fireflies users, including those on free plans. Through a reciprocal partnership, Pro and Business users will receive a one-year subscription to Perplexity Pro at no additional cost, while Enterprise users will receive three months of Perplexity Enterprise Pro.

Similarly, Perplexity Pro customers will receive three months of access to Fireflies Business, and Perplexity Enterprise Pro customers will get Fireflies Enterprise access for the same period.

Strategic Implications: Faster, Smarter Decision-Making?

The feature highlights a shift in enterprise tools toward real-time AI assistance and deeper integration between meeting platforms and live knowledge retrieval.

For IT leaders, the potential benefits include faster decision-making, reduced meeting fatigue and fewer follow-ups. With immediate access to both internal context and external information, teams can make decisions on the spot instead of waiting for post-meeting research.

The move aligns with the growing demand for “in-the-flow” intelligence, where AI helps as work happens instead of before or after the meeting.

Fireflies works across Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, making it appealing for organisations that use multiple platforms. Its multilingual support enables global teams to use the assistant without extensive localisation work.

Availability on free plans allows teams to pilot the feature with minimal barriers to entry.

Privacy, Risk and the Bottom Line

Fireflies differentiates itself from other AI meeting tools by stating that it does not use customer data for training. The Perplexity integration is fully controllable and opt-in, providing additional transparency.

As AI adoption grows, CIOs and CISOs will be closely examining tools for compliance, governance and data handling. Fireflies appears to be positioning itself as a secure and flexible solution in this space.

The new feature marks a notable step in the evolution of AI-powered collaboration, combining live meeting intelligence with real-time web search via Perplexity.

For IT leaders, this could present an opportunity to pilot AI tools that support faster, in-the-moment decision-making while maintaining control over data privacy and platform compatibility.
