Two thirds (66%) of employees who spend at least some of their time working remotely say that they’re more productive when flexibly working. However, many of these team members are struggling to unlock their potential in the mobile landscape, due to problems with non-optimised technology.

This new information comes from research conducted by the productivity experts, 99&One, part of the TeleWare Group, a Microsoft Gold partner which has almost 30 years’ experience providing technology solutions to its customers. 99&One is a managed IT services provider that was originally created to improve business productivity for businesses around the world, and creates technology experiences that are optimised to suit the needs of specific employees.

Held Back by Poor Technology

The research into the current state of remote working by 99&One was conducted with responses from 2,016 UK flexible workers. According to 99&One, the study revealed that companies still aren’t getting the basic tech configurations right for their mobile workers. Indeed, around one in five employees said that they still experience issues with connectivity when they’re working remotely.

Part of the issue, according to 99&One, is that employees are frequently overloaded with technology that they haven’t had a chance to properly master and adopt. This includes shared document tools, instant messaging services, video conferencing, cloud-based collaboration hubs, and audio conferencing.

Only 43% of the respondents in the research said that they got extra training or support for new technology. However, the employees that did get more training on the right technologies were 56% happier at work. Additionally, trained workers were more than twice as likely to get more work done in the same amount of time as their counterparts.

Improving Collaboration and Engagement

99&One believes that digital transformation is crucial to encouraging productivity in any business landscape, particularly those that allow for a mobile workforce. Unfortunately, many brands are struggling to come to terms with their IT investment.

For team members in all environments to continue communicating and working together efficiently, business leaders need to ensure that they’re delivering the right technology solutions. Only 1% of UK businesses claim that they have productivity levels above 1%. Optimised technology for both in-office and remote workers could be the first step towards improved productivity, engagement, and profitability, according to Steve Haworth, CEO of the TeleWare Group.

In the new digital workplace, providing employees with the right tools to carry out their roles at work isn’t enough. Team members need to feel confident using these tools. Companies should be prepared to deliver and embed technology in a way that puts the needs of people first. This way, everyone in an organisation will be able to better embrace change.
