Confused about Gemini pricing? Don’t worry – I’m right there with you. Google’s “Gemini” collection of multimodal language models is everywhere these days. Some Gemini experiences cost absolutely nothing to access. For instance, it doesn’t cost anything to see the AI-generated overviews (created with Gemini) on Google’s search engine result pages – whether you like them or not.

You also don’t need to pay anything “extra” to access certain features of the “Gemini app” in Google Workspace. A version of Gemini AI is available for all Workspace plans (including Business Starter). But if you want advanced Gemini features for Workspace, such as access to bonus features in meetings or security add-ons, there are extra fees.

Plus, there are a bunch of other fees for accessing the Gemini models in Vertex AI (Google’s machine learning platform), as well as pricing plans for Gemini APIs.

Since all of the different costs can be a lot to get your head around, I’ve created this guide for a quick (and hopefully easy) insight into all the costs you need to know.

Quick Reminder: What is Google Gemini?

Hopefully, if you’re reading this guide, you already have a basic knowledge of what Google Gemini is. If you don’t, it’s a collection of large language models built by Google to compete with the likes of OpenAI’s GPTs, and Microsoft Copilot.

The confusing thing about Gemini is that not only are there various different Gemini models available (from Nano to Gemini Ultra), but there are different ways to access models too. For instance, you can use Gemini AI models in Vertex AI to develop your own AI applications.

There are Gemini APIs for Google’s AI Studio. Plus, Gemini is available in the form of a browser app, through various Google tools (like Google Search and YouTube), and in Google Workspace. That also means that there’s a lot of different Gemini pricing elements to consider too.

If you want a closer look at the Gemini models, how they work, and where you can access them, check out my complete guide here. Otherwise, read on for a simple pricing overview.

Gemini Pricing in Google Workspace

Let’s start with the Gemini pricing in Google Workspace, since that’s where most everyday employees are likely to interact with the AI models first. Starting in Q4 2024, the standalone “Gemini app” – essentially the generative AI assistant version of Gemini (similar to Microsoft Copilot) is included in all basic Google Workspace plans as standard.

Prices for the Google Workspace plans (with the Gemini app) include:

  • Starter: $6 per month per user, with a 1-year commitment
  • Business Standard: $12 per month per user, with a 1-year commitment
  • Business Plus: $18 per month per user, with a 1-year commitment
  • Enterprise: Custom pricing

Included access to the Gemini app on these plans means you don’t have to pay anything extra to access Gemini 1.5 Pro (one of the more advanced versions of Gemini) to answer questions and generate content via the Gemini app for web or mobile.

However, if you want to access Gemini specifically in certain Google applications, such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, and so on, you’ll need to pay an extra fee.

Gemini Pricing for Google Workspace Add-Ons

The add-on plans for Google Gemini in Workspace allow you to embed Google’s intelligent models into more of your apps, and access advanced features. For each of these “plans” you’ll need an existing Workspace plan (mentioned above).

Once you have an account, you can request to “upgrade” with a Gemini add-on from within your dashboard. Currently – there’s a 14 day free trial too. The two central Gemini add-on plans available right now are “Gemini Business”, and “Gemini Enterprise”.

  • Gemini Business: $20 per user: This plan gives you access to Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets, Slides, and Meet. You also get Gemini Advanced (the more powerful assistant), with priority access to new features, and enterprise-grade privacy and security.
  • Gemini Enterprise: $30 per user: This plan includes all the features of Gemini Business, plus advanced AI meetings with AI note-taking and translated captions in 65+ languages. Plus, you can automatically classify, safeguard, and label sensitive documents with AI. You’ll also be able to gain full access to Gemini across all of your apps.

Here’s where Gemini pricing starts to get a little more confusing. Users can choose between fixed annual-term plans (mentioned above), or choose a “flexible plan” which allows them to add and remove licenses at any time. The flexible plans are a little more expensive, starting at $24 per user for Gemini Business, and $36 per month for Gemini Enterprise.

There are also specific Gemini plans for educational companies. Gemini Education (basically the same as Gemini Business) is $18 per month, per user, with a 1-year commitment. Alternatively, it’s $24 per month per user on the Flexible plan.

Gemini Education Premium (the same as Gemini Enterprise) is $27 per month per user, with a 1-year commitment, or $36 per month per user on the flexible plan.

Additional Add-On Plans for Google Workspace

On top of the main Gemini pricing plans for Google Workspace (Business and Enterprise), there are a few additional options too. For instance, you can currently get:

  • AI Meetings and Messaging: $10 per month per user on a fixed plan, or $12 per month per user on a flexible plan. This adds more AI-powered features to Google Meet and Chat.
  • AI Security: $10 per month per user on a fixed plan or $12 per month per user on a flexible plan. This gives you more features for automating data protection with Gemini.

Another potential option is the “Google One AI Premium” plan. You can access Google One AI for free with a Google account for up to 15GB of storage, and help with writing, learning and planning from Gemini. Alternatively, the Premium plan costs $18.99 per month, with a 1-month free trial.

The Premium plan includes access to more advanced Gemini models, 2TB of storage, and deeper Gemini integrations on apps like Gmail and Docs. From what I can tell, Google’s One AI Premium plan is intended more for individual users, while the Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons are designed for workplace teams.

Gemini for Google Cloud Pricing Options

For Google Cloud users, there are also a variety of Gemini pricing plans to choose from – starting with the price for “Gemini Code Assist”. This is the AI-powered collaborator for cloud developers designed to help you build, manage, and operate applications in the cloud.

It can help development teams solve code challenges, and provide guidance throughout the programming journey. Plus, it offers expert insights into best practices, accelerates troubleshooting strategies, and more. There are two plans available: Standard and Enterprise.

The Standard plan costs $19 per month per user with a 1-year commitment or $22.80 per month per user on a flexible plan. This includes access to code completion, code generation, chat in IDE, codebase awareness, code transformation, and more. You also get Gemini in databases, Firebase, and Colab Enterprise (Vertex AI). Plus, there’s enterprise-grade security.

The Enterprise plan costs $45 per month, per user with a 1-year commitment, or $54 per month per user on a flexible plan. This includes all the features of the Standard plan, plus access to code customization, and Gemini in BigQuery, Apigee, and App integration.

Alternatively, you can access Gemini in BigQuery, through the BigQuery Enterprise Plus edition plan. Fees here vary depending on your computing requirements, so I’d recommend contacting Google’s team for a quote.

Vertex AI Pricing (for Gemini Models)

As mentioned above, Vertex AI is Google’s machine learning platform that helps users create, train, deploy, and customize LLMs. The platform offers access to a huge range of AI models – not just Gemini. You can also experiment with options like Google Imagen, and third-party models from partners. For Gemini models, pricing varies depending on input and output options.

For instance, text input is charged by every 1,000 characters of input, and output. You’ll also pay more for larger input requirements (over 128k input tokens). Here’s a quick rundown of the prices for the main Gemini models on Vertex AI:

Google Gemini API Pricing Models

Finally, we come to the Gemini pricing for APIs – used by developers to create intelligent applications. Again, just like with Vertex AI, developers will have various Gemini models to choose from in Google’s AI Studio. Anyone can sign up for a Google AI Studio account for free – you only pay for the models you need to use.

The Free Plans

Most of the core Gemini models have a dedicated “free” tier, which allow you to experiment with the APIs to a limited extent. Notably, with all of the free tier APIs, your experiments might be used to train Google’s future models. Here’s a quick look at the free tier limits:

  • Gemini 1.5 Flash & Gemini Flash-8B: The free tier supports 15 requests per minute, 1 million tokens per minute, and 1,500 requests per day. There’s also free context caching for 1 million tokens.
  • Gemini 1.5 Pro: This free tier supports 2 requests per minute, 32,000 tokens per minute, and 50 requests per day.
  • Gemini 1.0 Pro: The free tier supports 15 requests per minute, 1 million tokens per minute, and 1,500 requests per day.
  • Text Embedding: This free tier supports up to 1,500 requests per minute.
