Google recently introduced their revamped Hangouts solution for business customers, to compete with more established brands like Microsoft, Atlassian, and Cisco. The search engine split their Hangouts experience into two sections “Meet” and “Chat”. Essentially, Meet is the video calling service for business meetings that’s just like Skype for Business.
With the new Google Meet experience, the company hopes to take on Microsoft Teams, as well as other bigger names like Slack. The question is, how does the modern company choose between all the different options available?

Google Hangouts “Meet” is basically a communication tool designed to enhance the office experience for people who already use G Suite. On the other hand, Microsoft Teams is built for companies who use Office 365. This means that adoption is going to be easier depending on which network of productivity tools you’re already using.
Meet is designed as the business-friendly alternative to the Hangouts experience. Similarly to Hangouts, Meet comes with video chat, and video calls for up to 30 participants. On the other hand, Microsoft Teams offers a similar experience, with easy integration to calendars and meetings, editing and sharing content, calling and meetings, and instant messaging.

Google’s “Meet” experience includes a range of features designed to make it easier to communicate and collaborate on the go, including dial-in numbers for people who are traveling, links that you can join with a single click, and integration with Calendar and G Suite users.
The main screen of the Google Hangouts Meet application features your scheduled meetings, along with location, time, attendees, subject, and more. You can click on a “join” button to add yourself to meetings through a mobile device, with a button which launches a video chat interface. For bigger conferences, you can access a window at the top of the screen detailing participant names and interactions.
On the other hand, Microsoft Teams is a somewhat more advanced social media platform for companies that offers a central place for groups to get together and collaborate. There’s the opportunity to customise channels for specific topics and integrate with other third-party software through “Connectors” inside of the channel. This means that Teams customers can essentially create their perfect environment. What’s more, the addition of artificial intelligence applications like “Bots” means that Teams may be a more sophisticated version of Google’s attempt at collaboration software.

Ease of adoption is an important feature to consider when choosing a collaboration tool. After all, if employees can’t use a resource, then it quickly becomes a pointless expense. Microsoft’s popularity means that many users are likely to be familiar with the Office 365 experience already.
Microsoft’s collaboration suite is growing at a rate of around 37% per year, which means that it’s hard to ignore. There’s little doubt that millions of users will be embracing Teams by the end of this year, and this could make it a fierce competitor to the leading solution “Slack“. Of course, G Suite also has some strength when it comes to popularity and adoption, with more than 3 million companies paying for the Google software already.
Ultimately, the decision of which collaboration app to use may come down to a determination of which productivity suite customers feel more comfortable with.
Finding Your Collaboration Tool
For now, Google Hangouts Meet is a somewhat minimal messaging app for the business environment. When compared to competitors like Microsoft Teams, Meet is somewhat lacking in features. Microsoft Teams includes strong integration with bots and various other unique solutions, while Meet is still finding it’s feet in the collaboration space. As Google continues to focus more on its UC&C strategy, Meet may become a more significant competitor.
