Industries across the board have been disrupted because of the pandemic, with some forced to shut at a moment’s notice to follow lockdown rules.

It’s no secret that countless businesses hastily adopted video communication technology, and this is even the case in sectors that you’d be forgiven for thinking are not radically progressive.

Zoom has revealed details of a court case conducted entirely over its platform which eventually ended in a $158m win for the corporate client of a Zoom customer.

Houston, Texas-based law firm SKV conducted a five-week trial on Zoom – examining 18 witnesses live and presenting hundreds of exhibits and pre-recorded content.

The law firm went as far as to say that the virtual trial was more productive than a typical in-person equivalent.

“The beauty of this trial was that we had not a single delay,” Mohamed Rehman, IT director at SKV, said.

“Everything was seamless, which doesn’t happen — even in court”

“[The Lead attorney] liked that Zoom enabled the judge to focus on witnesses, exhibits, and questioning attorneys with fewer distractions than would normally occur in the courtroom.”

SKV’s Zoom environment (pictured) had actually been set up at the end of 2019 with the help of Zoom partner Data Projections. It consists of a Poly Group Series 500 conference room system with over 160 inches of wall monitors and EagleEye Director cameras that track and zoom in on active speakers.

Rehman also addressed security concerns around Zoom that were raised last year, praising the firm for acting so quickly when under scrutiny.

“From an IT perspective, security is my big thing, and I had trust in Zoom from day one,” he said. “Even when there was negative news, Zoom invested right away and said, ‘We take this seriously’ with its 90-day security plan and encryption.

“As an administrator, I have control. I can route my traffic to any datacentre I want and restrict certain regions, which is amazing.”
