In this ClickUp review, Iβll be sharing my own insights into the pros and cons of the ClickUp platform for cloud-based project management. Iβve used this tool (as well as its competitors) for a few years now, and itβs fair to say the solution has come a long way in recent years.
Not only is ClickUp incredibly intuitive, but itβs versatile (capable of integrating with a wide range of tools), and it now includes a range of AI-powered features.
Based on some of the other ClickUp reviews Iβve seen, most people agree that this is one of the best project management solutions around. However, it does have a slight learning curve, and Iβve encountered better automation builders on other platforms.
Letβs dive into my full ClickUp review.
ClickUp Review: Quick Verdict, Pros, and Cons
Overall, ClickUp is a powerful cloud-based tool for project management that offers companies a comprehensive hub for communication, collaboration, and task tracking. It enables convenient workflow automation and boosts efficiency with the new βClickUp Brainβ generative AI solution.
Pros:
- Powerful generative AI functionality (ClickUp Brain)
- Comprehensive tools for product development
- Flexible project management system with multiple views
- Excellent resource and knowledge management capabilities
- Highly versatile automation options
- In-built collaboration (Docs, Inbox, Whiteboards, and Chat)
Cons:
- Lots of features introduce a slight learning curve
- No 24/7 real-time support
- Extra fees for AI features
ClickUp Review: The Key Features
ClickUp is packed with features intended to boost collaboration and productivity in the workplace. In fact, there are hundreds of customizable capabilities to explore, and the company is constantly adding new functions, from AI solutions to new collaboration tools.
Since it would take all day to walk you through every available feature on the platform, letβs break down the core capabilities into six key sections:
Project Management
At the heart of ClickUpβs toolkit is its robust project management technology. Similar to other well-known project management tools, like Asana, ClickUp gives you access to a range of features for managing workflows, such as task assignment, portfolios (where you can store crucial content), board views for workflows, and Gantt charts. I should also note that there are more than 15 βViewβ options to choose from, which is pretty impressive.
You can also chat inside of tasks, and customize permissions, or add unique fields to tasks to help you track the things most important to your projects. The task view is actually incredibly intuitive, with built-in AI support, so you can get help generating ideas as you work. Plus, youβll be able to access a time-tracking functionality in each task to help maintain momentum in your work.
Product Development
For product development teams, ClickUp offers all of the basic functionality you would expect for things like development βSprintsβ and sprint reports. You can create Kanban boards if youβre managing an agile development team and drag and drop tasks into different sections at will.
Plus, ClickUp has a handy βroadmap and backlogβ feature, which is excellent for managing disruptions. You can collect bug and issue requests with intake forms and immediately convert them into trackable tasks for team members to customize.
Knowledge Management
Knowledge management is a crucial function for any project management tool, particularly in the world of hybrid work. I was impressed by the knowledge management features I found during my ClickUp review and how easy they were to use. ClickUp βDocsβ are great for creating organized workspaces packed with all of your most essential data.
You can even connect your Docs to your workflows, collaborate with team members on Wikis and Docs in real time, and securely share content with anyone. Like many of ClickUpβs tools, the Knowledge Management features also come with access to AI solutions, which can help you to track down relevant content faster with personalized suggestions and guidance.
Resource Management
Another essential feature for both project and workplace management, resource management features ensure youβre getting the most value out of your assets. Iβve already mentioned the βtime trackingβ functionality, which can be implemented into any task, board, or workflow. Youβll also be able to create custom workload views for each team member (which can help with task assignments).
Another great feature of ClickUp is the ability to give your employees access to flexible dashboards with in-built productivity tracking metrics, insights into deadlines, and more. You can even set specific βGoalsβ for your team members to help with tracking wins.
Collaboration Tools
Notably, if youβre already using a popular collaboration tool like Microsoft Teams, ClickUp offers some integration options so you can combine the two platforms. However, you can collaborate pretty effectively within the ClickUp tool. The collaborative knowledge management tools allow team members to work on documents in real time and share content instantly.
Plus, youβre not limited to simply leaving comments on Docs. Users can access whiteboards to brainstorm ideas on an infinite canvas (there are even templates included). You can even start with a blank canvas, which you can convert into a graph, flow chart, or anything else.
Plus, youβll have access to a shared inbox, for tracking important tasks and requests, and chat tools for real-time communication while you work. I did find the chat functionality a little clunkier than using something like Slack, or Microsoft Teams, however.
Workflow Automation
As I noted earlier in this ClickUp review, creating automations with ClickUp can be a little clunky and complicated at times. However, the automation features themselves are still pretty good. You can build automations that work alongside external tools like Twilio and your email inbox, which is helpful. Plus, ClickUp gives you handy βsuggestedβ automation options to get started.
One particularly useful feature is the βAI automation builder.β If youβve never built an automated workflow before, all you need to do is tell your AI system what you want to accomplish, and it will build an automated process you can edit. ClickUp is also adding AI-powered updates and analysis to its automation system, further enhancing the platformβs value.
Other New and Exciting ClickUp Features
Alongside all of the key capabilities mentioned above, I wanted to draw attention to some of the new and exciting features that have emerged on this platform over the years, such as:
- Clips: A new video-focused feature on ClickUp that allows you to instantly share screen recordings and short videos with team members, similar to Loom. You can create a clip in any conversation, comment on clips, and turn clips into tasks. Plus, you can transcribe clips with ClickUpβs built-in AI tool and search inside Clips with ClickUp Brain.
- Clickup Pulse: The βPulseβ app within ClickUp is one of the top ways to boost your reporting and analytics capabilities within the platform. You can use it to get a high-level view of your teamβs performance at a glance. This adds to all the detailed report options you can access, as well as the automated report creator in the platform.
- ClickApps: ClickApps arenβt exactly a new feature in ClickUp, but they are interesting. They allow you to completely customize your teamβs workspace with built-in functionality within ClickUp; for instance, you can enable custom fields, comment reactions, dependency warnings, status progress insights, etc.
ClickUp Review: AI and Integrations
One thing that I really love about ClickUp today is how effectively it has incorporated generative AI into its toolkit. Notably, like most AI solutions (such as Microsoft Copilot), this functionality isnβt included for free with standard ClickUp plans.
Youβll need to pay an extra fee to add AI to your ecosystem, which starts at $5 per member per month. However, that fee could be worthwhile. Throughout my ClickUp review, I saw plenty of opportunities for generative AI to streamline my workflows.
You can use ClickUpβs AI tools to create entire articles or scripts inside of each task description or document. The tools can also edit your content, use simpler language, shorten content, summarize conversations, and explain topics.
Plus, the AI assistant can automatically create reports for you, suggest ideas for your workflows, help you find content in documents, and design your automation strategy (as mentioned above).
Another thing I love about ClickUp is how well it works with a wide range of other applications. ClickUp has its own open API, which allows you to create comprehensive, multi-channel automated workflows. Plus, there are plenty of one-click integration options for popular tools.
Within the ClickUp App Center, you can find integrations for Zoom, Dropbox, Trello, Salesforce, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and more.
ClickUp Review: Ease of Use and Customer Support
Compared to some of the other project management tools Iβve reviewed in the past, ClickUp does have a slight learning curve, thanks to its huge range of features. However, itβs still an extremely intuitive solution, with a modern interface and plenty of tooltips to help beginners.
Creating tasks, assigning them to team members, and monitoring results is very straightforward. Plus, if youβre accessing ClickUpβs additional AI tools, you can streamline a range of processes that would usually take more time, like designing workflow automation.
I really appreciate the fact that ClickUp is extremely customizable. It allows different team members to create their own dashboards and choose their own views based on their working styles. You can essentially customize every aspect of your experience without any coding knowledge.
Plus, ClickUp definitely offers plenty of useful learning resources, such as the ClickUp Academy, Help Docs, Demos, and βGetting Startedβ guides for beginners.
In terms of customer service, ClickUp doesnβt offer phone support. Live chat is available for users on paid plans, and free plan users can get in touch via email. However, the live chat support isnβt 24/7. The only way to get consistent real-time support is through ClickUpβs chatbots.
ClickUp Pricing and Fees
One great thing about ClickUp is that you can get started without paying anything. Thereβs a free forever plan thatβs pretty generous, offering unlimited tasks and plan members, 100MB of storage, collaborative docs, whiteboards, real-time chat, and more.
Generally, Iβd recommend this plan for individual users; however, it lacks many of the comprehensive tools youβll need to manage and support a team. Paid plans include:
- Unlimited: $7 per user per month: Everything in the free plan, plus unlimited storage, integrations, dashboards, Gantt charts, custom fields, and more. Plus, you can create Guest accounts, access email, create goals and portfolios, and access resource management tools.
- Business: $12 per user per month: All the features of the Unlimited plan, plus unlimited teams, custom exporting, advanced automation, time tracking dashboard features, workload management, and goal folders.
- Enterprise: Custom pricing: Everything in the Business plan, plus an Enterprise API, white labeling, advanced permissions, single sign-on, advanced security, live onboarding training, universal search, and more.
As mentioned above, youβll also need to pay an extra $5 per user per month to add AI to any of ClickUpβs paid plans. You canβt access AI on the free plan.
ClickUp Review: The Verdict
Overall, ClickUp is a powerful project management tool, ideal for keeping your team aligned, on track, and productive in the modern age of work. If youβre looking for a solution that combines comprehensive automation opportunities with project management, document collaboration, and AI, then this could be the ideal solution for you.
Of course, there are some slight downsides, such as a small learning curve for beginners on the platform (although this can be addressed with the help of AI). Still, I think ClickUp is an excellent choice for companies searching for a robust project and workforce management solution.
