A Scottish Independent firm focusing around the UC and cloud network, Commsworld has recently positioned itself in a fantastic place to compete against industry tech giants by investing more than £1 million in establishing a brand-new fibre telecommunications route to link networks throughout Edinburgh and Glasgow. This decision has made Commsworld the first Scottish Business in its sector to create its own “inter-city” fibre network, representing an ultra-fast connection solution between two of the largest economic hubs in Scotland that can operate at up to 100Gb/s – about 5000 times the speed of a typical UK connection.

So, What’s the Big Deal?

Most of the time, Independent firms for telecommunications will lease their bandwidth on top of other carrier networks (major network infrastructures connecting large geographic areas). Often, these solutions are operated by huge corporations like SSE, Virgin Media, and BT – but now Commsworld will be offering a service just like it’s larger rivals, after applying its special Dense Wave Division Multiplexing technology to a large span of fibre at almost unlimited capacity. According to Ricky Nicol, the chief executive of Commsworld, this is a huge and significant step forward for the business, as it means that an independent Scottish firm is finally operating at a huge level, rather than working underneath the biggest names in the industry. Commsworld now has complete control over speeds from the local network, to the business connection, exchanges, and beyond. This means that clients with offices across Glasgow and Edinburgh will be able to access some of the fastest speeds in the area.

The latest 80-kilometre dark fibre solution introduced by Commsworld exists between two of the highest-performing data centres in Scotland, the £200 million Fortis data centre In Lanarkshire, and the Pulsant data centre in Edinburgh. This means that Commsworld can offer customers ultra-fast, reliable, and secure network access between those two facilities, which can be used for mass data replication. Additionally, wholesale access can be offered to other communication providers.

A Huge Step for Scotland

The Commsworld development means that some of the top legal companies, tech firms, and life science solutions, as well as a range of public sector groups have the power to do amazing things through the network. This milestone in the business is a fantastic source of pride, and finally suggests that there will be an alternative to the major big names in broadband. According to Charlie Boisseau, the chief technical officer at Commsworld, the firm has established a sustainable and exciting new network that will allow it to stand tall with the largest names in the industry. He noted that several years ago, firms like Tele west and NTL were investing in massive new fibre and duct networks without any options to drive returns through that technology. That process left a gulf between the small ISPs or resellers, and big businesses like BT. By getting their own long-term dark fibre leases, Commsworld will be able to give customers a wider choice of super-fast connections between two major cities. Charlie Boisseau, CTO - Commsworld Perhaps even more excitingly, Boisseau said that “this is just the start”, the company is already looking into establishing a greater long-haul of routes, including options that will provide an additional Glasgow-Edinburgh network.
