The widely anticipated Prevent screen capture feature is now rolling out to Microsoft Teams Premium users following months of delay.

Launching for Windows and Android devices, the feature restricts access to visual meeting content by preventing screen capture from native device tools and numerous third-party apps.

Initially announced in May for a July launch, the feature is now earmarked for global rollout in late November.

How It Blocks Screen Sharing

For Windows desktop device users, screenshots will show a black rectangle around the meeting window. On Android phones and tablets, users will see a message indicating that screen capture is restricted.

For other platforms unsupported by the feature, meeting attendees will be limited to “join audio-only” calls to prevent capture, Microsoft said in the update. Mac, iOS, and web clients were due to be included in the initial update, but have not been kept on this updated timeline.

Organizers must manually enable the screen capture prevention feature for each meeting via Meeting Options, meaning businesses must ensure that meetings are prepped before they begin presenting to avoid accidental screen sharing.

Microsoft 365 admins can manage the device enrollment and Teams Premium licensing en masse via Entra ID.

Microsoft Taking Security Seriously

In recent months, Microsoft has made a series of announcements aimed at addressing the growing cyber threat.

The company announced new blocks against malicious file types and URLs in Teams chats and channels, as well as a new warning when users send or receive private messages containing links flagged as malicious.

The launch of the Prevent Screen Capture feature aims to further strengthen measures against what Microsoft recognizes as threats posed by bad actors pretending to be collaborators.
