Anthropic has released an Android app for its flagship AI service and ChatGPT competitor, Claude.
The app is free to download now and leverages Anthropic’s most advanced Claude 3.5 Sonnet model, which encompasses multilingual processing to offer “real-time language translation” and “advanced reasoning”. Its feature set and user experience are similar to Claude’s iOS and web versions, the former of which launched two months ago.
Like other conversational AI assistants, the product responds to questions provided through various types of prompts. These prompts can consist of text paragraphs, files, images, or a combination of these elements simultaneously.
Anthropic’s blog on the subject said:
The new Claude Android app brings the power of Claude—including our most powerful model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet—to Android users. The app is free and accessible with all plans, including Pro and Team.”
The Claude Android app is now available for download on Google Play.
Claude AI’s Feature Set
Anthropic presents Claude as a versatile tool for both personal and enterprise applications. It’s designed to be a handy assistant for a variety of scenarios, such as crafting a business proposal amidst back-to-back meetings, translating menus while abroad, brainstorming gift ideas during a shopping trip, or composing a speech while waiting at the airport.
Its various features include multi-platform support for continuity across devices or iOS or web versions, vision capabilities for real-time analysis, multilingual processing for on-the-fly translation, and advanced reasoning to tackle complex tasks like contract analysis or market research. Anthropic emphasises that these capabilities make Claude an invaluable tool for enhancing productivity and simplifying various tasks.
The Anthropic Story So Far
In May 2023, Zoom partnered with Anthropic to build sophisticated and reliable AI systems.
The collaboration aimed to enhance Zoom’s federated AI approach by integrating Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, into Zoom’s collaborative platform. The first solution to feature Claude was Zoom’s Contact Centre. Zoom Ventures, the company’s startup investment branch, also announced an investment in Anthropic.
Last October, Google invested $2 billion in Anthropic to accelerate AI innovation. Initially, $500 million was injected, with plans for an additional $1.5 billion over time. Prior, Google had invested hundreds of millions, securing a ten percent stake by April 2023. Notably, part of this includes cloud services. This signals Google’s commitment to leveraging AI’s transformative potential across its products.
Most significantly, in March, Amazon completed its $4 billion investment in leading AI business Anthropic.
First announced in September, the collaboration will leverage the expertise of both companies to enhance the safety of Gen AI, accelerate the development of Anthropic’s future foundation models, and provide access to AWS customers. Users are utilising Anthropic’s Claude AI on Amazon Bedrock to revolutionise user experiences, transform their businesses, and accelerate their Gen AI initiatives.
How Serious A Rival Is Claude In The AI Race?
Despite the extensive investment, Claude seriously competing with the likes of ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, or Google’s Gemini will naturally be a tall order for Anthropic. According to May 2024 data from Similarweb, ChatGPT has 627 million monthly visitors, while ChatGPT’s iOS app saw 480,000 downloads within five days, compared to Claude’s 157,000 over its first week.
Even when rivalled by the vast resources that back Copilot and Gemini, ChatGPT, as the pioneer since its public launch almost two years ago, retains its dominance in space.
However, Anthropic and Claude count several advantages that could grant the marginal gains required to evolve into a more serious competitor as the AI space begins to mature. The sophistication of its models, especially Sonnet 3.5’s complex reasoning and analysis, means it challenges even OpenAI and Google’s most advanced LLMs, including GPT-4o and Gemini Ultra.
As outlined above as attracting Zoom, Amazon and Google’s investments in Anthropic, Claude is a compelling product for enterprises focused on security and privacy around AI. Unlike ChatGPT, which has been criticised in the past for parsing sensitive business data to train its models, Anthropic confirms it does not extrapolate users’ prompts to inform its AI training.
Earlier this month, the organisation also announced a significant update to Claude AI, which featured several new enterprise-friendly AI capabilities, further cementing its position as a serious player in enterprise AI services.
