AWS Summit Online is a free virtual event built with the intent of educating those who leverage AWS infrastructure to build their technology stacks. There’s a diverse set of topics, including, but not limited to, how to choose an appropriate database, modernizing your data warehouse, and how to drive digital transformation via artificial intelligence, meaning there are a plethora of experiences to choose from.
Dr. Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer, Amazon.com, is a keynote speaker, and you can also catch his session on demand when you register for the digital event online. He’s one of the driving forces behind Amazon’s approach to cloud computing. Also making an appearance on the ‘main stage,’ AWS’s Swami Sivasubramanian, VP, AI/ML. Swami previously managed AWS’s NoSQL and big data services along with the engineering, product management, and operations sectors for AWS database services. You might want to catch his session, as he’s an interesting fellow, and holds over 250 patents in addition to having drafted 40 scientific papers as well as journals.
You can attend the event on your time when you check-in online and on-demand, which is great during these uncertain times. AWS hosts a myriad of other virtual events, summits, etc., which can also be beneficial depending on how your organization plans to leverage the technology.
In other news, AWS recently launched the second phase of a program that focuses on inclusion, diversity, and equity. Sandy Carter, AWS’ Vice President, Worldwide Public Sector Partners, and Programs, shared, adding the program should benefit minority-owned businesses, those run by women, black and brown individuals, veterans, and others who typically have a difficult time with equality in the enterprise space.
The new program titled the ‘Think Big for Small Business Program,’ took off quickly, according to AWS. This is why the company deiced to enter into what it calls a second phase, now in beta. Launched back in July 2020, it gives SMBs along with minority-owned public sector partners in the APN’s registration and select tiers, temporary access to a combination of ‘select perks.’
It even extends partners in the AWS Solution Provider Program a limited-time technical capability discount. According to Carter, more than half of AWS’ public sector partners are small and medium-sized businesses and/or women, black, and veteran-owned businesses. She added, they were hit hard by the novel Coronavirus pandemic.
AWS is beefing up its capabilities on all fronts, with the recent hire of Rashika Ramlal, its newest Executive Director and Country Manager in South Africa, hiring 150 new employees in Israel, and it recently scored a new deal for contact tracing in the UK. The company also announced the general availability of Amazon Timestream. The latest from AWS is a serverless time-series database for IoT and operational applications that allows them to scale ‘trillions of time series events per day,’ and to do so, according to the company, up to 1,000 times faster than relational databases at a fraction of the price.
