Mio has expanded its interoperability ecosystem to include Zoom.

The announcement means that Zoom Chat users can message users on Slack, Webex, and Microsoft Teams, and vice versa.

There are two fundamental use cases for Mio’s offering: the first is internal collaboration, connecting employees that use a range of messaging platforms within the same business – particularly in larger enterprises where different tools will be used in different teams.

The second is collaboration with people outside of your own organisation – a trend that has seen the likes of Slack and Microsoft add capabilities for external communication to their platforms.

Tom Hadfield, CEO at Mio, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Zoom to make Zoom Chat – their fully featured team messaging tool – interoperable with all of the other team collaboration tools, such as Microsoft Teams, Slack and Webex.

“The goal here is to enable everyone to stay in their preferred messaging app; that means accommodating internal teams who use different tools, and also meeting your partners and customers where they are, not forcing them to use guest accounts or monitor different chat applications”

Mio’s technology is built on the APIs offered by leading collaboration vendors. Its interoperability solution means that Zoom Chat users are able to join channels based in Slack, Teams and Webex from within the Zoom application, and also send direct messages to users of the other platforms. The recipients of the messages can then reply within their chosen application.

Other features such as threaded replies and file sharing are also supported.

Hadfield said that the announcement comes at a time when Zoom itself is placing a greater emphasis on its chat platform.

“You may think of Zoom as a video meeting tool, and it will always be video first, but Zoom Chat is now a really beautiful messaging tool that has been built from the ground up.”

Mio operates a software-as-a-service model and can be found in the app directories of Teams, Slack, Zoom and Webex. Once downloaded, Mio runs in the background; users do not have to work within the Mio app.

IT administrators can handle all of the configuration on the end users’ behalf and there is no client to installed on user machines.

Businesses can download Mio and start using it for free at www.m.io/zoom, with premium tiers and bespoke enterprise tiers also available.
