Slack, one of the leading collaboration tools available on the market today, recently announced that it had surpassed the milestone of 10 million active users per day (DAU). That’s a substantial increase from 8 million daily active users reported last year, and 4 million in 2016. More than half of those users come from countries outside of the US.

Not only is general usage of Slack on the rise, but according to a recent blog post from the company, the application is currently the go-to solution for 65 Fortune 100 Companies. Additionally, the number of paying customers who are splashing out on Slack’s “Premium” collaboration tool has also risen by more than 50% in the last five years, to approximately 85,000.

Slack Experiences Persistent Growth

News of the latest Slack statistics arrives just as the communication and collaboration market begins to speculate on the possibility of the app going public sometime this year – with a value of around $10 billion. The updated numbers are a positive addition to an ongoing period of success for Slack. Last year, the company acquired its rival Atlassian, removing HipChat and Stride from the market. What’s more, according to a report from “The Information,” Slack also reported more than $900 million in cash on its 2018 balance sheet.

When Slack launched in 2013, it was primarily an app that gave gamers a way to communicate while they played. Today, it’s a powerful tool in businesses around the world. Slack has successfully streamlined the communication and collaboration space for many companies, particularly as users with developer expertise build additional integrations and APIs to help users customise their experience.

The question is, what does this growth in daily users mean to Slack’s plans in the long term, and how does it affect its ongoing battle for collaboration domination with competitors like Microsoft Teams?

Is Slack Outshining the Competition?

Though Slack’s growth in recent years has been impressive, it hasn’t stopped people from considering alternative tools like Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex Teams, and RingCentral Glip. Microsoft’s decision to unveil a free version of their Teams software in 2018 helped to boost the company’s user base significantly, although it’s impossible to know how well the app is doing for certain.

Although Microsoft refuses to release any data that we could use to compare it to Slack in terms of user count, there are reports that suggest that around 329,000 organisations are active on the service today. It’s hard to estimate how a number like that would translate into daily active users, but it’s safe to say that competitors like Microsoft Teams aren’t out of the running yet.

In terms of predictions for Slack’s future, rumours are still circling about an upcoming appearance on the stock market through a direct listing this year. The rise in daily users is sure to make an investment in Slack even more valuable for anyone who wants to get involved with the potential IPO.
