During the end of January, 2017, Vidyo announced that they would be delivering a brand-new cloud delivery solution for embedded video services, known as “Vidyo.io“. The offering will be based on the various core capabilities of the routed Vidyo service for providing high-quality video over inconsistent video networks. The solution was inspired by the work that the company has previously been doing to enable premise-based video solutions that can be extended to a CPaaS delivery model.

As the headline for this article might suggest, the latest Vidyo solution will be focused primarily on the emerging CPaaS 2.0 market, wherein the solution will be delivering communications that are embedded within the application, using the internet instead of a PSTN integration for the CPaaS 1.0 solution like Twilio. The difference is that in a 1.0 CPaaS solution, the application is used to drive SMS messaging and voice across a PSTN, whereas in CPaaS 2.0 the video and voice solutions are embedded directly into the application and transported over IP-based internet.

How it Works

To deliver their new solution, Vidyo have enhanced their current portfolio in three primary areas:

  1. An enhanced global network and service infrastructure
  2. A new SDK optimised for the software development environment and language for applications
  3. A new pay-as-you-go model for pricing and consumption

The latest SDK will eliminate the need for extensive technological knowledge regarding video knowledge or on-premise hosting. Vidyo.io will provide SDKs for web browsers, as well as Android, Ios, MacOS, and Windows, with a consistent API capable of limiting development cost and time. The Vidyo.io will also allow for any combination of video participants, ranging from multi-party conferences to two-person video chatting. Because the experience is embedded into the application, this allows for an enhanced user experience and a fuller contextual integration alongside the remainder of the application.

Vidyo will be deploying the Vidyo.io service within the cloud infrastructure currently developed to offer cloud-based user licensed conferencing methods. As an element of the full deployment, Vidyo will both be expanding overall deployment in terms of location and capacity to improve experience. Additionally, the routing video solution will enhance both bandwidth optimisation and latency for multi-party opportunities.

Importantly, as part of the introduction for vidyo.io, Vidyo will be introducing pay-as-you-go pricing and business model solutions that have proven to be highly desirable for developers within the CPaaS 1.0 space. New users and developers will receive 4,000 free minutes, or 100,000 with a limited time offer that was announced alongside the new solution, and no credit card will be required for the initial sign up, which offers a low-risk opportunity for enterprises.

The Expanding CPaaS Marketplace

According to the CEO of Vidyo, Eran Westman, the evolving digital sphere is driven by a mobile approach to business, which requires easy access through any device, at any time, any place. Vidyo.io currently represents the only available API platform that offers the quality and reliability that enterprises need to provide superior performance during video connections. He noted that the mission of Vidyo was to “better visually-connect the world”, and that Vidyo.io will allow developers to ensure a more consistent user experience through a resilient, and reliable multi-party video embedded within any application.

Many experts currently agree that the CPaaS 2.0 market is currently growing as the next biggest area of communication solutions. During the Cisco event launch at the end of January, Cisco also spoke about having CPaaS 2.0 capability as part of the Spark platform. As we move further into the future of communications, it seems that focus on the CPaaS 2.0 market will only continue to expand, as communications move from separate stand-alone experiences into comprehensive services that can be integrated directly into application user experience.
