Founded in 2013, Medxnote is a healthcare technology company that provides clinicians with a secure messaging platform. Medxnote is entirely built on Teams, turning your Microsoft Teams environment into a secure, integrated, HIPAA-compliant channel for collaborating with fellow healthcare professionals.

It was designed during the COVID-19 pandemic so that first-line hospital staff could communicate using Teams on their mobile phones and stay updated on the latest information. Importantly, Medxnote has a long-standing relationship with Microsoft. The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS)relied on the combination of Microsoft Teams and Medxnote’s bot technology to navigate the complexities of coordinating healthcare services in the institution.

The Medxnote platform allows you to access patient records easily to improve patient flow. It can integrate with your electronic health records (EHR systems) so that you can fetch information already existing in your organisation. At the front end, Medxnote features a customisable bot that you can tailor for a specific use case. For example, you can get real-time notifications when a consultant is required, when diagnostic results are ready, when there is a potential flu alert, to engage with clinical trial recruits and several other use cases.

Medxnote launched its bot-based app on the Microsoft store in July 2020. Let us review it in more detail.

Inside Medxnote for Microsoft Teams

To leverage the full potential of Medxnote, your organisation must be a Medxnote customer with an active account. The app is meant for clinical environments with a mature EHR system so that Medxnote can connect with the EHR to fetch information and power real-time alerts.

If you are new to Medxnote, you may download the integration from Microsoft AppSource as a trial. The company includes a demo hospital environment with the integration so that you can explore how it would function in the real world.

Here are the key features Medxnote has to offer:

  • Custom robotic clinical assistants (RCA) – You can use Medxnote to create your custom chatbot and notification engine in line with your clinical requirements. The application ships with pre-built use cases commonly required in clinical environments, but you can always build or configure your own.
  • HL7 FHIR integration – Medxnote is compatible with the fast healthcare interoperability resources or FHIR standard by HL7. This allows it to exchange information with most clinical systems and EHR environments, including homegrown applications.
  • Channel notifications – You can set up the Medxnote app to send channel alerts on important events, which may vary depending on your use case. For example, you can send real-time and scheduled alerts on patient status — or, notifications can be triggered by an event, such as when a diagnostic test result becomes available.
  • Sharing images via Teams – You can use Medxnote in Teams to upload image files to your clinical systems. The app can securely capture high-quality images via Teams on your smartphone and upload them to EMR, EDMS, or PACS systems. The app can complete an image capture and upload task in less than 60 seconds.
  • The Medxnote pager – Medxnote helps you replace old-school pager devices with a smarter alternative. It functions like a regular pager, helping you reach your colleagues and clinical stakeholders via Teams on a mobile device. Importantly, Medxnote allows you to page internal Teams users in your organisations as well as external users from different organisations.
  • Security – This is probably the most crucial feature that makes Medxnote so unique. It makes it possible to conveniently fetch, share, and upload information without risking non-compliance or breach of privacy. For example, you can view and assess a patient’s test results as soon as they are available directly on the Teams app.

Why the Medxnote App Makes a Difference

A mobile messaging app can prove invaluable for healthcare professionals in today’s complex landscape of therapeutic procedures, health insurance protocols, and COVID-related restrictions. Medxnote is compliant with all industry regulations. It can be customised to fit your institution’s EHR systems. Finally, you can tailor the workflows for multiple treatment scenarios.

What We Think

The combination of Medxnote and Microsoft Teams marks a complete transformation in how clinicians and caregivers communicate. It can reduce delays dramatically and also improve treatment outcomes for the patient. For instance, it is estimated that pathology result alerts can save clinicians up to 1 hour per notification.
