What Googleβs EU Rules βBreachβ Could Mean for Workspace Users
Google is facing scrutiny from EU regulators, with the tech giant expected to be charged with violating EU rules designed to curb the dominance of Big Tech.
According to Reuters, sources indicate that the charges follow Googleβs unsuccessful attempts to address concerns from EU antitrust regulators and competitors regarding its search result practices.
While the focus is on search, the broader implications could extend to Googleβs UC solutions. Given the deep integration between its search services and the Workspace suite, as well as rising tensions between the US and the EU, potential sanctions could have a ripple effect across Googleβs enterprise offerings.
The European Commission has been investigating Google for potential violations of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) since March last year. Under the DMA, companies found in breach can face significant penalties, including fines of up to 10 percent of their annual global turnover, which can increase to 20 percent for repeat offences. In severe cases, the Commission may even impose structural remedies, such as requiring the company to divest parts of its business.
