A fundamental characteristic of unified communications is that it is accessible for everyone, regardless of their job role, location, portfolio of devices and technical ability.

A reliable UC platform will address all these points and more but, in the case of location, it’s possible that more needs to be done behind the scenes to ensure everything works smoothly.

RingCentral offers its cloud PBX in more than 40 countries, but that still raises the issue of what happens in areas beyond its coverage.

This was a big driver behind the launch of RingCentral’s bring your own carrier (BYOC) solution last year.

The BYOC offering means customers can plug in the services from any existing carrier around the globe.

It may have only launched late last year but Jonas Ahlstroem, Group Product Manager at RingCentral, said the ability to reach remote areas has led to solid demand already.

“We have seen a large interest worldwide, with customers seeing BYOC as a great solution for their particular needs,” he said.

“A great example is one of our financial customers. It’s a bank that had a really remote branch with no coverage at all, which was really impacting their user experience.

Now, because of our BYOC offering, they are fully connected which has massively improved the experience of their employees and, therefore, their customers. That is a textbook use case of BYOC.”

Enterprise Focus

RingCentral said that while businesses of all sizes can benefit from BYOC, it is particularly apt for large enterprises.

These global businesses are typically taking a staggered approach to cloud migration which, in some cases, can take years. This is coupled with the challenge of bleeding as much value as possible from costly, multi-year contacts with carriers that may still have some distance to run.

RingCentral’s BYOC comes into play here because it is compatible with any carrier in the world, meaning enterprise can continue using their existing PBX deals and avoid costly early-cancellation fees.

“Our solution for BYOC is carrier agnostic which is an extremely important part of the offering,” Ahlstroem said.

“We want to make sure we support our customers regardless of their choice of carrier for BYOC”

A Flexible, Steady Journey

It’s relatively simple for a small business or start-up to sign up to a UCaaS platform in a matter of minutes with just a credit card. Global enterprises with established infrastructure, complex contracts and thousands of customers need to tread far more carefully.

BYOC solutions such as the one offered by RingCentral allow their colleagues to benefit from all of the cloud-based features that comes with a UCaaS platform – many of which will be crucial in the age of hybrid working – while also buying time on the tricky journey to the cloud.
