For a while now, businesses have been discussing the possibilities of virtual and augmented reality in the workplace. Although we still have a while to go before alternative realities are just as immersive as real-life interactions, companies like ServTech Global Holdings are already working on new ways to improve the AR experience.

Recently, ServTech Global, a market-leading multinational software company, experimenting in the areas of virtual reality and augmented reality, announced the arrival of a proprietary AR solution for the logistics industry via its subsidiary, Vection Italy. The company partnered with the Alfacod logistics brand to provision and created an augmented reality “Optimised picking tool” for the industry. This solution is designed to increase process efficiency and quality in complicated logistic environments worldwide.

Thanks to new and improved technology in AR solutions, augmented reality is becoming an increasingly compelling tool for businesses in search of simple ways to improve the way they complete various tasks in the workplace.

Bringing AR into the Logistics World

According to the Managing Director of ServTech, Gianmarco Biagi, the entry of AR and VR products into the logistics industry is an obvious step forward, dictated by the needs of ServTech’s customers. The proprietary multi-reality technology available from ServTech ensures that businesses can unlock new opportunities in the way that they manage conventional business processes.

The President of Alfacod, Giorgio Solferini, said that the collaboration with Vection, ServTech’s wholly-owned subsidiary in the AR and VR space, will provide his company’s customers with an extended range of opportunities within the AR and VR realm. Although the first offering will begin in the logistics industry, Alfacod believes that AR and VR also have broader applications across a wide range of other environments too.

Solferini said that he believes that AR and VR tech will begin to be adopted at a quicker pace across a range of different verticals, as businesses strive to find ways to access the right information, in the right place, and at the right time.

Discovering the Benefits of AR and VR

In the Logistics space, employees are often required to perform various actions when dealing with an order, from locating a product, to scanning it and moving it to the loading dock. Technology in the AR world helps to facilitate the identification of the correct products, reducing the time and costs associated with warehousing operations.

The implementation of AR systems has the potential to ensure significant cost reductions in the logistics environment, alongside a faster and more immersive picking process. Field tests of AR systems have shown a substantial range of productivity improvements in warehousing operations so far. For instance, validation from AR can decrease selection errors by up to 40%. Already, one of the world’s largest logistics companies, DHL has announced the development of their own enhanced picking technology in most of its geographical regions worldwide.

If AR and VR have the power to transform logistics, it could also deliver incredible opportunities to the unified communication and collaboration sector too – making it easier for teams to work more effectively together in the years to come. One final thought – as this news confirms, AR can be delivered via a handheld device, such as a tablet or phone as well as by something like Google Glass – people do not need to wear full AR headsets, such as the Magic Leap device, to make it a ‘reality’ – making it much moire usable in the workplace.
