RingCentral has released a host of new features for its RingCentral Video product.

The new functionality includes presenter overlay, video virtual backgrounds, breakout rooms and picture-in-picture mode,

Natarajan, executive vice president of products and engineering at RingCentral, said:

“How we work is changing and the capabilities we need to have to communicate and collaborate will evolve”

“We are rapidly delivering new capabilities of RingCentral Video that not only make video meetings more enjoyable and more effective but combine video with team messaging so people can get more done work more effectively before, during, and after their meetings.”

The new features for video meetings are:

  • Presenter overlay: Allows the presenter to be seen on top of presentations, similar to weather forecasters
  • Video virtual backgrounds: an upgrade from static-image backgrounds, videos can now be placed behind participants
  • Breakout rooms: Meeting owners can split participants into smaller groups. This function will be available in Q2 this year
  • Picture-in-picture: Participants can minimise the video meeting within the RingCentral app and view other windows such as messages

RingCentral’s chat function has also been giving an upgrade, including the ability for users to create personal folders that group teams and conversations together.

Meanwhile, admins can give users the ability to invite people from external organisations into the RingCentral system.

Meetings during the pandemic

An update to the RingCentral mobile app means that users can now use their smartphones as a controller for RingCentral rooms.

Phones can be connected to the room system via Bluetooth, avoiding the need for multiple people to touch the same console.
