Microsoft has announced it will end support for versions of its Surface Hub.

“Effective October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 Team edition on Surface Hub v1 and Surface Hub 2S,”

Microsoft mentioned on a blog.

But beyond missing out on the latest updates or security patches, one key feature being lost may render these older editions of the Surface Hub obsolete for many users.

Examining Surface Hub

Microsoft Surface Hub is a large, interactive collaboration device designed to transform any workspace into a dynamic teamwork environment.

It features a high-definition touchscreen, advanced pen input for natural writing and drawing, and integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Whiteboard, and Office 365 apps to facilitate real-time communication, brainstorming, and content sharing across locations.

After the support is pulled, however, Surface Hub devices running Windows 10 Team will no longer receive security updates, patches, or support, and most critically, the Microsoft Teams app will stop functioning.

This, for a device that is billed as “bringing the best of Microsoft Teams Rooms to any space,” essentially means companies who have been relying on these older versions will now need to replace their hardware in order to continue facilitating in-person meetings.

Microsoft advises customers using Surface Hub v1 to upgrade to Surface Hub 3, while customers who have Surface Hub 2S have several choices before operating system support ends on October 14.

Microsoft had already ended hardware support for Surface Hub v1 in November 2022, no longer shipping firmware and drivers, leaving the collaboration displays only with operating system updates.

The Surface Hub 2S, although also running on Windows 10 Team like the v1, lets customers migrate these devices to Teams Rooms on Windows for free until October 14, 2025.

It’s also possible to replace Windows 10 Team with Windows 11 Pro/Enterprise for Surface Hub 2S devices used in personal office scenarios.

Equally, Microsoft offers Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridges to convert Surface Hub 2S devices into a Surface Hub 3 with the new Teams Rooms on Windows experience.

Surface Hub 3 was introduced in 2023, runs Teams Rooms on Windows and supports newer features such as Microsoft Edge integration and Miracast.

Microsoft Support Stop

Microsoft has been doing the rounds recently, announcing the dates for when support will stop for a variety of its products.

The tech titan issued a warning to users of Office that they should move before support for the software ends, with the date also being October 14.
