A rising American Pop star has just released the world’s first album composed and produced almost entirely by Artificial Intelligence.

In a collaborative effort between YouTube sensation and former American Idol Star, Taryn Southern, and the innovative AI music production platform, Amper, “I AM AI” is the first album to feature algorithm-based music that was created with almost no human intervention.

First Single “Break Free” Released August 21st

Built and designed by a team of musicians and tech developers, Amper is a cloud based AI music production platform that forms uniquely structured songs based on the artist’s preferences for how they want the song to sound. To begin the process, the artist simply selects a “mood, style and length” and the software quickly composes an entire song that is bespoke in sound and royalty free.

Speaking on the motives of Amper and what part AI will have to play in the music industry’s future, Amper spokesman, David Silverstein, states:

“The future of music will be created through the collaboration between humans and AI and everything we do as a company we want that collaborative experience to propel the creative process forward. We think AI moving forward, whether it’s in the creative or none creative spaces, will help creators be more creative, be more effective, be more efficient and will open many, many doors to new opportunities that we don’t even know exist yet.”

Much like Artificial Intelligence in the world of business and contact centres, it seems that Amper focusses more on enhancing the way computers collaborate with humans to improve efficiency, quality and creativity rather than attempting to replace them completely. It is a friend to the musician that offers guidance and fills in the gaps to deliver better results in half the time.

Though there have been many doubts and concerns regarding the authenticity of an artist who releases music that has been composed by a computer and not a person, as a singer who provides the vocal and lyrics for AI to build on, is the relationship Taryn shares with Amper really any different from the one many other famous pop stars share with their human producers?

Aside from a subtle name credit on the back of an album, a music producer’s face very rarely appears on the front cover and all of the attention is instead focussed on a vocalist who often played no part in the musical composition of their songs.

With this in mind, it seems a tad hypocritical to demonise Amper for offering budding artists an affordable new alternative that enables them to create music without having to spend millions of dollars/pounds on studio time and costly record producers.

How do you feel about Amper? Do you think AI really has a place in the music industry? Did you enjoy the song?
