Almost three-quarters of Microsoft Teams Enterprise customers also subscribe to the vendorβs Teams Premium, Teams Phone or Teams Rooms solutions.
While Teams took something of a backseat during Microsoftβs latest earnings call, with an inevitable focus on AI and Copilot, CEO Satya Nadella offered one eye-catching statistic illustrating the extent of Microsoftβs dominance in UC and collaboration.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during the callβs initial address:
On top of all this AI innovation, Microsoft Teams usage remains at all-time highs as people use it to streamline all their communications. Nearly 75 percent of our Teams Enterprise customers now buy Premium, Phone or Rooms.β
While Nadella only explicitly mentions Teams this once on the call, the line is an impressive mic drop moment, signalling the extent of cross-app uptake among the myriad Teams Enterprise customers investing in the broader Teamsβ ecosystem.
It reinforces Microsoftβs market prevalence, with a majority of customers leveraging Teams not only as a collaboration tool but also as a video conferencing and hybrid work cornerstone and a cloud telephony product.
Other Operational Highlights
In other compelling operational figures and successes from this quarter, Nadella noted that Microsoftβs AI business is on track to surpass an ARR of $10 billion next quarter, which Nadella says will make it the fastest business arm in Microsoftβs history to reach this landmark. Nadella also stated that Microsoft had made its 365 Copilot responses twice as fast and βimproved response quality by nearly three timesβ.
βThis innovation is driving accelerated usage, and the number of people using Microsoft 365 Copilot daily more than doubled quarter-over-quarter,β Nadella added.
Nadella also cited some eye-catching customer case studies around Copilot. Investment bank UBS will deploy 50,000 seats in its largest financial services deal so far, while Nadella states that almost 70 percent of Fortune 500 companies now use Microsoft 365 Copilot and that customers continue to adopt it at a faster rate than any other new Microsoft 365 suite.
How Was Microsoftβs Finances This Quarter?
Microsoftβs first fiscal quarter of 2025 signposted a relatively solid financial performance driven by its robust cloud revenue and heavy AI investments.
Revenue reached $56.5 billion, marking an eight percent increase year-over-year, and earnings per share (EPS) rose to $2.99, a 27 percent jump. Microsoftβs Intelligent Cloud segment, which includes Azure, grew by 19 percent to $24.3 billion, which Microsoft credited to demand for AI-related services as the vendor continues to expand its capabilities in generative AI for enterprise use.
The Productivity and Business Processes segment, which houses Office 365 and LinkedIn, also performed well with a 13 percent increase, reaching $18.6 billion. However, hardware, as captured by the Personal Computing segment, saw a modest three percent increase to $13.7 billion, as Windows and device sales showed slower growth compared to previous quarters.
Overall, Microsoftβs strategic focus on cloud infrastructure and AI innovations puts it in a strong position heading into the next quarter.
Microsoft Unveils New Teams Layout To Boost Collaboration
Earlier this week, Microsoft unveiled a new Teams layout for chats and channels to bolster collaboration and productivity.
Microsoft has overhauled the Teams chat and channels experience, unifying chats, teams, and channels into a single consolidated space under the Chat tab. This redesign aims to streamline usersβ digital workspace, simplifying the process of accessing, managing, and organising conversations for a more efficient and organised experience.
Jeff Teper, President of Collaborative Apps and Platforms at Microsoft, wrote in an announcement blog:
Weβre thrilled to announce the next step in our journey to shape the future of collaboration with the introduction of the new chat and channels experience. This new experience is designed to help you collaborate more efficiently and effectively. Itβs simple by default, enabling everyone to stay on top of what matters, and itβs powerful on demand, allowing you to organise information and communicate your way.β
The redesigned chat and channels layout will be available for public preview in November. This update will be accessible across Teamsβ desktop, mobile, iOS, and Android apps, providing a consistent experience across all devices.
