The increasing ubiquity of workplace collaboration platforms could mark the end of emails, according to research from Slack.

The vendor commissioned Wakefield Research to survey 3,000 IT decision-makers worldwide – 500 of whom are in the UK – to reveal how collaboration platforms are shaping the future of work.

The research indicated that collaboration platforms are set to become the “new norm”, reducing the reliance on emails and meetings.

Half of UK Slack users responded that it is “likely” that another form of digital communication will completely replace email within the next three years. This is more than the global average among respondents.

Two-fifths of UK business communications users would prefer to go without work email than without Slack or Microsoft Teams, with 19 per cent of those stating they’d be “very interested” in switching to a primary business communication platform.

Nearly all UK respondents reported that they could develop better connections with their bosses through Slack  rather than email, while 54 per cent prefer to use Slack or Teams to communicate informally.

UK users also are the most likely to opt to communicate with their team via the collaboration platforms rather than through a video call.

Nearly 80 per cent of global respondents say they will continue to use the platforms when “normal” work routines resume. Meanwhile, 85 per cent of UK users replied that business communication platforms are “extremely” important for their business continuity.
