Microsoft has published the latest Microsoft Teams features for May 2022.
A separate string of updates were released at Microsoft Build 2022, which introduced tools to embed Teams features, new capabilities for the Teams Toolkit for Visual Studio, app store updates, and compliance tools for ISVs.
Running in parallel to these technological updates, there have been various other news developments for Teams last month, including BT launching a Teams voice offering for channel partners.
Tom Arbuthnot, Microsoft MVP, spoke to UC Today about the latest Microsoft Teams news which includes news from Microsoft Build, Teams and device updates, and event news.
Teams Performance Update
The Teams app is available via the Microsoft Store. There is a new brightness filter adjustment and soft-focus video filter can be applied before and during meetings through device settings. Meeting organisers can also now start Together mode for all meeting participants by checking the ‘Select Together Mode for Everyone’ option.
Multi-windows support on Teams is available on virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) for Azure Windows Desktop, Windows 365, and VMware. Users will be able to have pop-out chats, meetings or calls in separate windows. Meeting and call controls are located at the top of the meeting window to keep them accessible.
Give and Take Control if Teams can now be used on VDI for Citrix. It enables participants to control the presenter’s shared content with the presenter’s permission. The presenter can take back control at any time. Background blur is available on VDI for Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365.
Dynamic Emergency Calling has been enabled for Teams on VDI for VMware. Emergency calls can be made while working from home, and users can verify the address they wish to be sent to emergency services.
Suggested replies are now available in Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, French, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Italian, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Norwegian, Russian, Korean, Czech, Danish, Turkish, and Polish.
Teams meetings organisers can now choose a Calendar Show status feature to display their status for scheduled meetings. Meetings details can also be hidden when a user’s calendar is shared by selecting the private meeting functionality.
Admins can turn on mandatory comments when an approver responds to a request. Personal approval data can also be exported into an Excel file more easily using the Approvals app.
Teams Meeting Rooms & Devices
Zoom meetings can now be joined directly through Microsoft Teams Rooms on Android devices. The Poly Studio X30 and X50 currently support this functionality, but other devices will be added soon.
The orientation of the participant video feeds can now be displayed horizontally below the meeting stage. The horizontal gallery can be selected from the layout chooser experience in the Teams Rooms console.
Additional apps, channels and enhancements have been made to Team Templates content. The Walkie Talkie app in Teams is also now available on Crosscall devices for frontline workers.
The Logitech True Wireless Bluetooth earbuds have been certified for Microsoft Teams. The earbuds include noise cancelling and immersive sound. Hybrid ANC removes distracting noise, and Transparency Mode enables users to continue to hear their surroundings without needing to remove them. The earbuds can be customised and controlled via the Logi Tune app.
The Huddly L1 camera has been certified for Microsoft Teams for large and medium rooms. The camera captures all meeting participants using a one-inch image sensor and a customised lens.
The ADECIA Tabletop Solution has been certified for Microsoft Teams Rooms. The solution automatically detects components, configures devices and optimises audio for medium-sized rooms.
The Intellimix room audio software digital signal processor has been certified for Microsoft Teams Rooms when installed using the Lenovo ThinkSmart Core.
The Teams app usage report has been updated to help admins track app usage metrics.
Policy operation details expanded: Group policy assignments and other policy operations can now be viewed by admins in the activity log. There are new columns including group name, policy type, submitted by, and overall status.
You can now view the external app ID on the Manage apps page when you enable the column from column settings.
Staff license holders will be able to view insights for student activities, such as skills, career insights, and career progress, in Career Coach.
The following features will be made available for Teams’ customers in US Government Community Cloud (GCC), US Government Community Cloud High (GCC-High), and the United States Department of Defense (DoD).
Users can now use the Together mode meeting layout, which places participants on a shared background. Meetings can be joined anonymously from the Teams desktop app, whereas previously, users were directed to use the Teams web experience. Live captions are also now available in Teams on VDI for Azure Desktop and Citrix.
Presenters can choose whether they appear on the left or right of the content and resize their video feed while the content is automatically adjusted. By choosing to ‘un-mirror’, presenters will be able to see their writing displayed the right way around, in the same way as the audience sees it.
High-fidelity music mode creates an improved audio experience in Teams calls and meetings. This applies to sound picked up on a microphone and from applications.
When opening Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files shared in Teams, users can choose to make browser, desktop, or Teams the default opening setting.
